Gnash talks to LI kids about his new album and where he loves to sing the most

We were lucky enough to be chosen to interview Gnash, the singer, songwriter, record producer, DJ and rapper. He recently released his first album, called “we.” We traveled to Manhattan to meet Gnash at Irving Plaza before his concert that night. We were excited to ask him some questions about his life and music career. Here’s some of the things that Gnash told us.
The first question we asked was where did the name Gnash come from. He said that his first name is Garrett and his last name is Nash, so he just moved the initial G over directly in front of Nash, and when you do that, the g becomes silent.
Next, we asked him to tell us about the album called “we.” Gnash said he worked on the album for two years, and is very proud of it because it has a lot of great songs. He is also proud, he said, because this album shows a lot of growth from when he was as a young artist to now. This album documents a lot of the things he has learned in his life.
We were curious to know if it’s harder to sing, produce records, or DJ. Gnash said singing was the hardest because you have to record it, and it takes a long time. Production is pretty quick, and being a DJ is purely fun, he added.
We asked Gnash to pick his favorite song out of all he's written, and he said that the next one he writes will be his favorite. He explained that he wants to have the next song help more people than the last one did. He said that he is grateful that his music helps people.
We really like the song “I Hate You, I Love You,” featuring Olivia O’Brien, so we asked what it was like to have this song nominated as best breakup song at the 2017 Radio Disney Music Awards. Gnash really liked this question! He said he used to listen to Radio Disney as a kid, and he thought that the nomination was great.
After traveling on tour, we asked how it felt to come back home to Los Angeles and see your mom and dad? Gnash said he’s grateful for technology, so he can communicate with his parents when he is on tour. In the old days, people would just miss their family when they went on the road. He said it will feel fantastic and that he can’t wait to see them because he loves his mom and dad very much.
We were interested in finding out who Gnash would collaborate with if he could choose any artist in the entire world. He said he would have wanted to work with John Lennon and Bob Marley. He also said he would love to work with Frank Ocean and Jack Johnson. He surprised us by saying he also loves to make music with his cats!
Before the interview, we were debating Gnash’s favorite place to sing. Some of us thought he would say the shower. Others thought he would say the studio. When we asked this question, surprisingly Gnash said the shower and his car were his favorite places to sing. He even told us that he just got a new Tesla.
Finally, we asked Gnash if he had been in any relationships. He said yes, and that his girlfriend, Rosabelle, is also his manager. He explained that she manages his whole career and his personal life.
To sum it up, meeting gnash was an exhilarating experience. Gnash is a really nice person. We recommend that you go to one of his shows, listen to his new album, “we,” and go to a meet-and-greet if he has one. Tell him the Kidsday reporters sent you!
