I went to Magic Fountain in Mattituck, and in my opinion it is the best ice cream shop on the North Fork. The ice cream is homemade and it is delicious. I talked to Jennifer Hunter -- she is the manager and has worked there for four years. Magic Fountain has more than 100 flavors of ice cream. The shop's most popular flavor is Cookie Monster; it is light blue with cookies in it.

Magic Fountain started out as a Dairy Queen, in the early 1980s, and later it became Magic Fountain. Its busiest time of the year is the summer because there are so many tourists coming by. Jennifer told me that the shop sells between 500 and 1,000 ice cream cones a day, and that's a lot of cones for a place that small. I would imagine it does that well because its ice cream is just so good.

The ice cream the shop makes is kept in freezers at 5 degrees or colder. It takes them just minutes to make the ice cream.

The flavors are made up by pretty much everyone who works there.

My last question was if any of the ingredients were local. Jennifer said the shop uses local produce such as strawberries and blueberries -- and, surprisingly, wine-flavored ice cream. My favorite is cotton candy ice cream. If you come to the North Fork, this should be one of your places to visit. Even in the fall. It is located at 9825 Main Rd., Mattituck.
