We had the of privilege of going to Manhattan and previewing the movie “Johnny English Strikes Again,” which opens Friday. Rowan Atkinson stars in this movie as a hilarious "English" teacher who is brought back into service as a secret agent. His assignment is to find the culprit who has been breaching the security systems in the United Kingdom. Agent English believes the culprit is the very rich super tech giant, Jason Volta (played by Jack Lacy). Johnny is freaked out by all the technology in the world and he refuses to even have a cellphone. With the help of his sidekick, Bough (Ben Miller), and a hot red Aston Martin, they embark on a disastrous yet eventful journey through the French Riviera to save the world.
This movie is great for kids because it makes you laugh, laugh so hard your stomach hurts! One example of a funny part is when he takes one of the wrong energy/sleeping pills and dances like a rock star all night. After dancing the night away and well into the hours of the morning, he is exhausted and falls asleep at an important meeting with one of the head agents. Bough comes in to save the day yet again. He has to explain everything Johnny was going to report. Bough has to carry Johnny English out of the room. Man, can Johnny snore! This movie is also perfect for kids because as in every good movie, there is a lesson to be learned. The lesson we took away from the movie was that one person can change the world.
Adults will love this movie, too! Our teachers and parents were doubled over with tears of laughter. Adults can definitely relate to Johnny’s frustration with the technological world. The payphone scene brought up many memories of running out of coins and wanting to scream. Adults were touched by the attraction between Johnny and Ophelia (Olga Kurylenko), who have a comical yet endearing relationship.
Throughout the movie we had many favorite parts. One of those parts was when Johnny is wearing his special super-powered climbing suit. Bough shuts down the power, which causes Johnny to catapult backward from several stories up through a window and into the freezing water. Another uproarious scene was when Johnny is wearing the virtual-reality headset. He impatiently starts the mission and instead of staying in the room, he walks/crawls through the streets of London creating havoc everywhere he goes. You’ll never look at a baguette the same way again. We don’t want to give away all the silly surprises, so you must go see it for yourself.
