Who might be the next Tim Burton growing up right here on Long Island? That’s the question the Huntington Arts Council is posing as it seeks entries for its inaugural “Nightmare on Main Street” student art exhibition.
The juried show will be open to the public from Oct. 26 to Nov. 5 at the council's Main Street Petite Gallery, 213 Main St., in Huntington village.
"We wanted to give youth an opportunity to display their work in a nontraditional show. We want youth to think of the macabre," says Diana Cherryholmes, executive director of the Huntington Arts Council. "It's just fun. It's fun in a different way than cut-out pumpkins are fun. Fun creepy. We want them to explore that. What does that mean in their world?"
The council is looking for students from K to 12 whose art might put chills down viewers’ spines. Prizes of $50 each will be awarded in two age categories: Senior Division (grades 9 to 12) and Junior Division (grades 8 and below). The maximum size of an entry is 36 inches wide and high, including frame. Sculpture is permitted.
Art must be entered by Oct. 5 as a high resolution digital image formatted for PC (4 X 6 @ 300 dpi) or photographs of work created within the past four years. Entry fee is $35 for up to two entries; additional entries are $5. Entries must be submitted to the Huntington Arts Council, 213 Main St., Huntington by Oct. 5 and will not be returned.
Artists will be notified of results by Oct. 12.; art must be available from Oct. 23 to Nov. 5. There will be an opening reception from 6 to 8 p.m. on Oct. 26. For more information, visit huntingtonarts.org or call 631-271-8423.
