Kidsday visits Sweeties Candy Cottage
We got the “sweetest” assignment. We went to Sweeties Candy Cottage in Port Washington to meet the owners of this colorful candy store and sample some of their unique creations. Best of all, we got to make our own chocolate concoction and name it so that customers can buy it when they come into the store!
With the help of the owner, Lisa Hodes, we melted chocolate wafers and mixed in marshmallows, M&M’s, crushed peanut butter cups and caramel. We stirred it up and filled small molds with our chunky chocolate. It was messy, sticky work! We also dropped some of the mixture onto baking trays — kind of like making cookies — and placed those into the refrigerator to set. While we waited for the chocolate to be ready, we toured the store. They have all kinds of cool candy and even some brands of candy back from when my mom was a kid. They also sell toys and baskets filled with goodies, and all kinds of homemade chocolates.
When our candy was ready to eat, we popped it out of the molds and tried it. We needed to think of a name for our candy based on what it tasted like. We came up with “Sugar Rush,” and the name stuck. It was delicious, and we decided that candy-making might be the best job there is. We hope you’ll try our creation when you visit Sweeties Candy Cottage. Everything in the store is a feast for your eyes and your stomach!
