If you're looking to take a break from the beach or barbecues this weekend, there are many fun Labor Day events for families. From a classic children's performance to exploring nature, turtles, art and more, there's so much to do on Long Island. Here are my top five picks for fun, family-friendly activities this weekend:

1. Shinnecock Powwow at the Shinnecock Powwow Grounds (Westgate Road, Southampton). On Fri.-Mon., kids and adults alike will enjoy storytelling, crafts, native foods, tribal dances and more. Price: $12, $10 ages 6-11 and seniors, free ages 5 and younger.

2. Snapping Turtles: Prehistoric Monster Hunt at South Fork Natural History Museum and Nature Center (377 Bridgehampton / Sag Harbor Tpke., Bridgehampton). Learn about the Snapping Turtle as well as the Painted Turtle along with a nature walk at 10 a.m. on Saturday. Price: $7 adult, $5 ages 3-12, free ages $2 and younger.

3. The Little Mermaid at the CM Performing Arts Center (931 Montauk Hwy., Oakdale). Everyone's favorite mermaid comes to live in this musical by Alan Menken at 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on Friday, 7:30 p.m., Saturday and 2 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Sunday. Price: $9.

4. Young Naturalists Club at Brookside County Park (59 Brook St., Sayville). This free event on Sunday at 1 p.m. features nature box and pinecone crafts, scavenger hunts, hiking, gardening and more.

5. Framed: Step into Art at the Long Island Children's Museum (11 Davis Ave., Garden City). Sunday is the last day to enjoy this exhibit which lets you inside the framework of famous paintings and create your own art gallery. The exhibit is free with $11 museum admission.
