Every summer I work at my grandfather’s family business in Freeport. It’s the Atlantic Nursery, which has been around for 89 years, and I am the fourth generation doing my part.

My grandfather, Sig Feile, lets me help out on some days, especially when it’s busy. I enjoy helping customers. I also feel that I am learning to have a good work ethic and how to make co-workers fellow friends.

My grandfather came to work at the Atlantic Nursery when he was 18. He started working there because his grandmother needed help. So he left his home in the small German town of Weiler and headed off to America.

He started off small, living in a little house on the property. He then worked and went to school here. He met my grandmother, Janet, and they got married and gave their two daughters a chance to work, and they took it. Someday I’ll get the business passed down to me as well.

My favorite time of year is Christmas. I love when the carolers come from Freeport High School and when the trees glisten with snow and the decorations are all sparkly and shiny. It’s all just so beautiful!

When I’m helping I usually mark prices, help out at the register, collect carts and bring in supplies from the storage room. It’s my choice to work, and I really enjoy it.

The employees are so friendly and kind. I am learning great work ethics for the future. I am also learning the best ways to respect my co-workers and other people. I have really connected with the employees and others.

This is truly an awesome place. If you’re looking for the best garden gifts, supplies, plants and advice on gardening, then you’ve found it. So, if you want a chance to see me, then come on down to the Atlantic Nursery, at 250 Atlantic Ave., Freeport (atlanticnursery.com). I really want to carry on this family business and tradition. Hope to see you there!
