LI teacher wins Barnes & Noble ‘My Favorite Teacher’ contest

Gregory Guido, a teacher at Northport High School, was named the local winner of the 2016 Barnes & Noble “My Favorite Teacher” contest.

The contest ran from Jan. 4 until March and gave middle and high school students the opportunity to nominate their favorite teacher by writing essays, poems or thank you letters that shared how their teacher influenced their life.

He was nominated by a student, Jane Nasta, who said that Guido transformed physics from a confusing and difficult branch of science to an area of study that she wishes to pursue in college.

Guido, who is currently in his 29th year of teaching, said he has taught physics at Northport for the past 18 years and has been in the International Baccalaureate (IB) program since its inception 13 years ago. Nasta is a student in his IB physics class.

“I’m honored that Jane took the time and effort to go out of her way to nominate me, as well as write some very thoughtful things about me in her essay,” Guido said. “She is a thoughtful young woman who is a model of persistence, motivation and good humor and I’m blessed to be able to work with her. She intends to attend Tufts University next year to study architecture.”

As the local contest winner, Guido will be honored at Barnes & Noble’s East Northport location on April 14, at 7 p.m. Nasta will also be honored at the ceremony with a certificate of recognition. Guido will now move on to the regional competition. From that pool of regional winners, Barnes & Noble will name one Barnes & Noble National Teacher of the Year.
