The American Specialty Toy Retailing Association (ASTRA) has named Saturday as Neighborhood Toy Store Day to encourage families to shop locally to support their community.

The nationwide shopping event is just in time to kick off the holiday shopping season and to introduce consumers to the benefits of shopping at independently owned toy stores.

"Locally-owned toy stores add charm and character to neighborhoods across the country and provide families with a unique selection of high-quality toys not typically found at big box retailers," Kimberly Mosley, president of ASTRA, said in a recent news release. "Neighborhood Toy Store Day recognizes the role independently-owned toy stores play within the community, as well as the families each store serves."

Funky Monkey (360 Wheatley Plz.) in Greenvale will be hosting a free, child-friendly event. Families can learn how to fly a drone and land on the discount of your choice (10, 15 or 20 percent off any one item $15 or more) from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
