New books for recent college graduates

We found three books recent college graduates should read now.
A pocket-size hardcover book called “Stuff Every Graduate Should Know” (Quirk, $9.95) by Alyssa Favreau packs in information about the big picture and the small details. It includes advice on finding an apartment, writing a cover letter and making new friends, as well as building a grown-up wardrobe, taking care of yourself when you’re sick and cooking a hard-boiled egg.
In “There Is Life After College: What Parents and Students Should Know About Navigating School to Prepare for the Jobs of Tomorrow” (William Morrow, $25.99), Jeffrey J. Selingo interviews twentysomethings and the employers who hire them — including Google, Enterprise Rent-A-Car and Disney — to present a guide to navigating the path to fulfilling work. Selingo is the former editor of the Chronicle of Higher Education, where he worked for 18 years.
Though college graduation seems an early time to think about marriage, it isn’t too early to think about what makes a good partner. In “The Marriage Test: Our 40 Dates Before ‘I Do’ ” (Penguin, $16), Jill Andres and Brook Silva-Braga lay out 40 challenges for couples, including talking about money matters such as student loans and credit scores, borrowing a baby for a weekend, and going through 24 hours handcuffed together. The couple takes the challenges themselves and writes about them in a humorous, memoir style.
