Rainbow Loom, more books for kids

Kids who love the Rainbow Loom rubber band weaver may want to read "Lucy and the Magic Loom: A Rainbow Loomer's Adventure Story" (Sky Pony Press, $7.99) by Alice Downes. The chapter book is aimed at ages 6 to 10 and tells the tale of 12-year-old Lucy, who receives a golden magic loom that leads her through a secret passageway into an enchanted world of creatures and castles. She must use the loom to create items to help her overcome challenges.

National Geographic Kids' "Guide to Photography: Tips and Tricks on How to Be a Great Photographer from the Pros & Your Pals at My Shot" (National Geographic Kids, $14.99) features tips on editing, photo sharing, photography careers and more. The book was put together by children's author Nancy Honovich and National Geographic Photographer Annie Griffiths.

It's the perfect time of year for "My First Book of Football: A Rookie Book" from the editors of Sports Illustrated Kids (Time Inc. Books, $11.95). The book, like the game of football, is divided into four quarters and takes young readers play by play through a game, from pregame coin toss to the winning touchdown. It defines terms such as "first down" and "fumble" and illustrates concepts with live-action photos of NFL players.

For six years, husband-and-wife team Jim and Jamie Dutcher lived deep in Idaho's Sawtooth Mountains documenting the social behavior of wolves. They've written a picture book called "A Friend For Lakota: The Incredible True Story of a Wolf Who Braved Bullying" (National Geographic Kids, $16.99). It's aimed at ages 4 to 8 and tells the story of how a wolf named Lakota dealt with bullying by members of his pack.
