The events of 9/11 changed America in many ways. Unfortunately, this tragic day affected my family. My cousin, Brooke Jackman, was in the Twin Towers. She was right out of college, age 23, and started a job right before this horrific day. Every year my family hosts charity events in Brooke’s memory.

Brooke had such a huge love for literacy and children, so we have a charity event where we read books to underprivileged children and then donate the books to them. My family also started a foundation in her memory, where people can log on to her website and donate money so that children in underprivileged areas can receive necessary school supplies.

In addition, every spring my family sponsors a 5K walk-a-thon to honor Brooke. From this also, we donate the money to books and literacy programs for children. Many families in America, especially in New York, have lost special people in their lives due to this horrible event. Every day we think about and miss Brooke, but honoring her in these ways helps my family remember her.
