Sundae Donuts launches day camp where kids can make their own treats
Sundae Donuts, known for its over-the-top and stuffed doughnut creations, is hosting a day camp this summer at its Huntington location where kids can learn to make and stuff their own.
Each day of the four-day camp sessions set for August will cover a different hands-on topic. On the first day, campers will learn how to make and decorate their own doughnuts, while day two calls for ice cream making. On the third day, campers will learn to make the spot’s signature dipped cones, which will then be used as the base for a cookie dough sundae.
On the last day of camp, dubbed “Graduation Day,” kids will put together their own “sammies,” which are made up of bombolone stuffed with ice cream and finished with toppings and drizzles. They'll then participate in a mini graduation, where they'll wear self-decorated chef hats and aprons and receive a scroll, meant to unofficially welcome each camper as a member of the “Sundae Squad.”
Aside from the sweet experiences, kids will have the chance to decorate their own picture frames; they'll tie-dye shirts and make bracelets and slime. Games will be played daily and snacks (Goldfish, pretzels), lunch (pizza) and beverages will be served, too.
Two to three counselors will spearhead each session. Head doughnut decorator Brianna DeLuna will talk to the campers about her job, which entails making the sweet indulgences for the shop. Each session can accommodate up to 12 kids aged seven to 12. Campers should be dropped off at least 10 minutes before the scheduled start time.
Founder Michelle Tadross joined the doughnut frenzy with the opening of her Montauk spot in 2019 as a project to keep busy during the pandemic. Sundae Donuts offers a selection of more than 15 yeast-raised doughnuts daily, with trendy flavors such as Oreo, s’mores and Cinnamon Toast Crunch. While the main focus is creative doughy treats, there are also ice cream-based creations like "twists" (doughnut-infused ice cream with mix-ins and drizzles) and milkshakes. On the Java front, Sundae has a lineup of traditionals: cappuccinos, lattes, Americanos and macchiatos.
Sundae Donuts Day Camp (all workshops run from noon to 3 p.m.): Session 1: Aug. 1-4, Session 2: Aug. 8-11 (canceled), Session 3: Aug. 25-28; $200 for the week; tickets can be purchased on sundaedonuts.com; 377 New York Ave., Huntington.
