Toddlers and 'Sesame Street Live'

This weekend, “Sesame Street Live: Can't Stop Singing” is at Nassau Coliseum with shows through Sunday.

When we heard the show was coming to town, my husband and I weren't sure if we should bring our 18-month-old daughter. While she loves all the characters on “Sesame Street” and enjoys music and singing, we were concerned she wouldn't want to sit still and watch a 90-minute show.

But we figured we'd give it a try. After all, it's an interactive show filled with Elmo, Abby Cadabby, Big Bird, Ernie, and more, singing and dancing -- how could it not hold her attention?

Well, it did for the most part and I'm so glad we went.

If you're considering taking your little ones to a live show, here are some of my suggestions that I learned from taking my daughter, Maggie, for the first time:

-- Go early. At the “Sesame Street Live” show, there's an awesome show before the show, which is free with your ticket. The new Play Zone from VEE Corp. is the perfect place to get pictures with your kids and the characters as you never know who will make an appearance. Children can sit in Big Bird's nest, play in Oscar's trash can (pictured above), color with Abby Cadabby (pictured below), twirl in Zoe's dance studio and even visit Elmo's World and play his piano. This was Maggie's favorite part because she was able to run around.

-- Choose a show around nap time. We decided to keep her up for the 10:30 a.m. show (which is typically her nap time). She was excited and happy the first half of the show, but by the second half, she was so overtired we debated leaving the show early. Next time, we'll go at a different time if there are other show times.

-- Bring your patience. Although you have to buy a ticket (which means a seat) for your little one, the seats aren't really equipped for them at the Coliseum. They will spend most of the time on your lap.
