There have been plenty of new store openings on Long Island this season, but none we recall that featured a gorgeous yoga aerialist performing heart-stopping twists and poses on a gigantic yoga swing suspended over a blacktop parking lot. Gasp.

But this is how Athleta, the fitness and lifestyle store, heralded its arrival in Manhasset on Tuesday night. The spectacle helped lure a mob of shoppers inside where tables and shelves are laden with Athleta’s very specific take – feminine yet functional – of workout wear for yoga, running, swim, gym and hiking.  Added to the mix, some dresses for bodies beautiful and other lifestyle garments like cute high-low cotton sweaters for everyday living.

And evidenced by the busy checkout desk, women weren't holding back scooping up exercise pants ($89), shorts ($54) and even maxiskirts ($108), their workout wear fever stoked perhaps, by wine and hors d'oeuvres, provided by InStyle magazine, also on hand for the opening event.

Like its verrry nearby competitor, lululemon, literally a few doors down, (uh-oh, we feel an activewear smackdown brewing) Athleta offers free hemming on exercise pants and classes across a variety of sports including Vinyasa yoga, boot camp and Zumba. To find out more or sign up call 516-365-2912. The store is located at 1950 Northern Blvd., right next to the Gap, which, not coincidentally, owns the chain.
