Behnaz Sarafpour: Old World charm

Behnaz Sarafpour made good use of the historic Jane Hotel — near the Hudson River in Chelsea — creating what felt like a traditional Parisian salon, with antique chandeliers and patrons ensconced on plush leather and velvet sofas, the models drifting by in creamy, elegant attire.

It was all très, très civilized, and quiet, as were pieces like the yellow embroidered double-face Cady vest with black, lace-trimmed pant. Or the black cashmere sweater with large iris atop a black guipure lace pencil skirt. Or a pale pink strapless, the top curling open like flower petals.         

And pant lovers, take heart. For evening, you’ll want to snap up her tux pants with a vine of foliage up the side. These clothes don’t need to shout across the room with bright colors or patterns. They whisper. And get attention.

With perhaps one exception — Sarafpour gave hippie chic a try, with a casual, rough-knit sweater, pulled and distressed and worn with wide-leg iris-dappled trousers. It felt a tad out of place in this poised lineup. Then again, for those who don’t like to live their lives with every hair exactly in place, this fuzzy affair may be the perfect addition to your wardrobe.
