Likely, the basics of summer outfitting are already in your closet — you know, the tank tops, shorts, the white pants — these a given. But how to add oomph, personality and yes, practicality this summer with items that you can wear again and again?

“Assess what you already have and think about how you want to freshen it up,” advises style expert Adam Glassman, the creative director of Oprah Daily and a special correspondent for “Extra” and ABC’s “The View.” “Everything should be able to be worn in multiple ways from casual, to professional to date night,” he notes. And his mantra when it comes to new purchases? “You should not spend a lot of money on trendy items. … Trend is meant to come and go.”

Here's a look at a few easy ways to upgrade, refresh what you already have and summer-ize.

Terrific toppers

Go way beyond the basics with a new statement-making topper, whether an oversized gauze number with rhinestone detailing or something with embroidery or patchwork.

For those summer nights when temps dip, “You definitely need some kind of jacket — whether a tailored blazer or something oversized,” says Glassman, adding that they add a bit of polish to even the most casual looks. He points to the “crinkled and wrinkled” fashion moment this season. One example: an oversized shirt with crystal embellishment ($96) at Penny Lane in Huntington fits the bill. The store’s owner, Gabrielle Sunshine, suggests going beyond the basic jean jacket with “Something with embroidery or patchwork — it will make you reach for that item every time. It will elevate any look and make you feel cool, even over gym clothes.”

Suit up

Make a splash with this sporty, colorblock swimsuit that offers more coverage.

Bikinis are still major, yes, but for active types and/or moms whose beach-going is more about running after than sunning, some more modest silhouettes are gaining popularity. From Target comes the water-worthy swim romper ($45) while Free People in Huntington Station is offering a retro cool “short john” style that’s sleeveless with an extended leg ($198).

A charmed life

Add a little razzle dazzle around your waist with this chain belt (so retro!) featuring sparkly danglers.

Lisa Salzer, the owner of Huntington-headquartered Lulu Frost jewelry, touts a summery charm-chocked chain necklace — “a charm collage” she calls it, full of danglers, “that tell your personal story. It’s very DIY, and a way to electrify your wardrobe and you can wear it in infinite ways,” she says. Beyond flip-flops

Upgrade your flip-flops to something more fashionable like this the Nottie sandal by Solei Sea sold at Detour Boutiques in Sayville.

They’re great for the beach, but shouldn’t your sandal offer comfort and style (without the thwacking noise)? An 'it' bag

At Let’s Bag It in Merrick, the Downtown Crossbody by Royln ($148) is loaded with plenty of extras including a chain, attached AirPod pouch and a smart crossbody strap. “It’s sizzling hot,” says Lauren Harris, the co-owner of the shop. “Athleisure is a huge thing right and we have a lot of young mothers walking around in leggings, and they want something casual.” Her partner (and daughter), Julien La Salle, recommends adding bag charms to the outside. “You can transform a simple outfit that’s more your personal style,” she says. The store has plenty of those, too.

It’s a cinch

There's a new emphasis on the waist this season and belts are big.

“There’s definitely an emphasis on the waist this season,” Glassman says. While some garments have self-ties, belts are having a moment. One sparkly charm bedecked chain number (a '90s throwback) sold at Let’s Bag It ($140) does double duty slung at the waist and as easily, can be draped over a handbag. Another statement maker at Detour Boutiques comes in cognac suede and is artfully studded in solid brass. At $270 it’s an investment but will live in your closet for a long time.

Set point

Sagine Pierre, owner of Sage and Angie boutique in West Hempstead, models this flowery shirt and trouser set.

This is the season of sets — tops, skirts, shorts, pants in matching fabrics or prints, that can be worn together or work as separates. “We love the ease of matchy, matchy, and with a set you can break it up and wear the bottoms with a tank top or tee or the top over a skirt or shorts,” say Penny Lane’s Sunshine. “There’s a lot of longevity to sets.” Adds Sagine Pierre, owner of Sage and Angie boutique in West Hempstead, “It’s just so comfortable but can take you to a lot of different places. It’s like wearing a sweatsuit but more elevated and summerier.”

Yee-haw!

“Cowboy core,” has been trending for a couple of years, but with Beyoncé’s “Cowboy Carter” tour making the rounds, there’s a huge boost of interest in all things Western. Feel empowered to go whole hog with fringe, the boots even, or just opt for the hat (which can serve as a good sun blocker, too).
