D.K. Brothers in Stony Brook offers men's clothing and lifestyle accessories
Long Island is dotted with specialty shops for women, but men’s boutiques? Not so much. They’re rather rare finds.
D.K. Brothers by Madison’s Niche opened to help fill a retail void — not just for fashionable men’s clothes but also for guy-friendly lifestyle items.
At the 14-month-old shop in Stony Brook Village, customers are keen on having an alternative "to a big box store," says store business manager Eric Rectanus. "They say it all the time, ‘There are no men’s shops out there.’"
The store’s general vibe is "casual to business casual. We’ve found a really nice mix for the generations," says Rectanus. "A 20-year-old doesn't want to look like his father and your dad doesn’t want to dress like a kid."
Merchandise includes outerwear, underwear, and everything in between, such as sweaters and loungewear. Ralph Lauren and Tommy Bahama are brisk-selling brands.
Accessories and grooming items are also part of the in-store mix. Johnnie-O Surfside Fresh ($78) is a popular cologne. "It smells like a beach day," says Rectanus.
The store’s kitchen and home department is a noteworthy addition. "A lot of guys are out there looking to up their ante in the kitchen," he says. Bold Gold Hot Sauce to spice up dishes in striking grenade-style containers ($16) has been getting a chef’s kiss from customers.
Barware includes decanters ($34 and up), fish corkscrews ($18) and stainless steel ice cubes to chill drinks without watering them down ($45).
The store features a wide array of coffee-table books that cover music, national parks, classic cars, lodges, music and more. The expansive pet department features everything from sherpa jackets for dogs ($36) to cat toys shaped like a bird, carrot, and slice of pizza ($12 apiece).
"We have men covered," says Rectanus. "Why not men’s best friends?"
