Gun jewelry: Creepy or cool?

We think it’s fair to say that most of us are in favor of getting illegal guns off the street, right? But would you want to wear jewelry made from a gun?

Jewelry company Liberty United is offering just that. Here, illegal guns and bullets from local communities are transformed into bracelets, rings and necklaces, each of which bears the serial number of an illegal gun that has been taken out of circulation. It’s all made in America and…here’s the kicker: The company donates 25% of its profits to programs that reduce gun violence in the United States.

Ethos Water founder Peter Thum, a philanthropist who is well known for his work on social causes, created the concept and brand. This is not his first foray into the business of turning guns into wearables. In 2009, he co-founded Fonderie 47, a company that reinvents assault rifles from war zones in Africa into luxury jewelry, watches and accessories with a percentage of profits going towards gun destruction and education in war-torn regions there.
As for the jewelry, it’s unisex, beefy and a bit industrial. Available in brass, steel, stainless steel and sterling silver, a bracelet goes from $95 - $385, a necklace with a beaded chain runs from $90 - $350 and rings are $85 - $225. You can learn more and shop at libertyunited.com.

Truth told, we had mixed feelings about the products, so we took an informal survey among friends. While one person said, “I like them... they’re edgy and conversation pieces,” another got the “heebie-jeebies” at the notion of wearing a made-over gun. What do you think?
