A PacSun T-shirt that displays the American flag upside down has some shoppers angry at the retailer on Memorial Day, with some social media users calling the black and white shirt "disrespectful," "disgusting" and "insulting."
The shirt, part of a collection designed in collaboration with rapper A$AP Rocky, is being promoted as part of a buy one, get one half-off sale for Memorial Day. Customers are sharing an image of the shirt, displayed in the window of a retail location, to PacSun's Facebook page to show their unhappiness with the design.
"PacSun, are you serious with the upside-down flag shirt?" a Facebook user, Paul Sanchez, wrote on the company's page. "I seriously can't believe you would think it is OK to market that type of disrespect to our country and a flag at all, ESPECIALLY this weekend."
According to a government publication, the American flag "should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property."
Some customers are wondering whether the flag was printed upside-down as an accident, or if it was purposefully designed as a political statement, USA Today reports.
"As a Veteran who has lost Veterans, all I feel when seeing a shirt like this on display at an establishment I have purchased from before, is shame," a customer, Jess Leigh, wrote in the site's review section.
Despite many negative reviews, the shirt is currently still available for purchase at pacsun.com.
