Greek specialty foods at Titan Bakery Outlet

Titan Bakery Outlet in Deer Park sells Greek groceries and baked goods, May 11, 2015.
The Tanger Outlets in Deer Park offer great deals on apparel, accessories and housewares. If you want great deals on feta, spanakopita and olive oil, head across Grand Avenue to the Titan Bakery Outlet.
Since 1984, Titan Foods has been one of Astoria's best and biggest markets for Greek specialty foods and baked goods. In 2005, the company relocated its Queens warehouse to Deer Park. "We found we had a lot of people who wanted to shop at the warehouse," said the company's vice president Dimitris Hadzipolihronis, "but we could only sell them large cases of food."
In 2013, Titan opened this tidy little retail store whose shelves, tables, refrigerators and freezers are crowded with Greek imports. There are scores of well-priced extra-virgin Greek olive oils -- in both 17-ounce bottles and 3-quart cans -- and most bear a "best-by date" that allows consumers to avoid out-of-date oils. Right now, look for olive oil that is best by 2016.
Also of note: a range of fruit preserves, including oddities like whole green bitter oranges in syrup ($5.99 for 16 ounces); dried sage and oregano still on their stems; Ouzo-flavored hard candies; feta cheese from Arachova ($7.59/pound) and Dodoni ($9.59/pound). Apparently Greece has jumped on the provenance bandwagon. You can buy dried split peas from Feneos (in the north of the Peloponnese) and dried chickpeas from Grevena (in Western Macedonia).
Once you enter, one whiff tells you the store adjoins Titan's wholesale bakery operation. Display cases of fresh-baked savory pies, sweet pastries and cookies are replenished throughout the day.
Titan Bakery Outlet is open Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
