At Treasure Lane, a women's boutique in Island Park, owner Kelly Duffy believes that a shopping experience should be approachable, affordable, and, above all, make sense.
"My biggest kryptonite is things not being in order," she says. "I’m very detail-driven. Everything is color-coordinated and organized at my store."
Opened in November, the store is a near twin of its sister boutique in Vero Beach, Florida, which launched in 2012. Duffy, 55, splits her time between the two towns where she lives and operates her businesses.
"I grew up in Levittown, but my family all went to Long Beach in the summers," she says. "I've really been going to the area all my life." She fell for Vero Beach vacationing there.
The Island Park brand expansion is the latest career development for Duffy, a married mother of three. After studying fashion merchandising at Tobé-Coburn School in Manhattan, she worked as a buyer in the garment industry for two decades.
Treasure Lane specializes in women’s apparel, accessories and home goods. "We extracted the best of the best from all those categories for New York," she says.
Merchandise appeals to multiple generations of women. "My customer can be as young as 16 and a grandma who’s 80," Duffy says. "Everyone can find something."
"Whether she’s going to a party or hosting one, I want my customer to have a great outfit, fun jewelry and beautiful accessories," she adds. "It’s a lifestyle; it’s all-encompassing."
Selections at the shop are "always evolving," says Duffy. "We get boxes of merchandise every day." Treasure Lane prices are predominantly under $100, she adds.
Jeans, a bestseller, run $60-$80, while trendy sweaters with pops of embroidery go from $48-$58. Hoop and pendant earrings are $18 and up; lustrous cocktail glasses are $18-$24.
Operating year-round stores in separate states takes coordination. When she’s away in Vero Beach, Duffy’s staff and some family members have it covered.
"I never really knew that I would be on the entrepreneurial side," says Duffy. "But I love everything about it, from buying merchandise to seeing a satisfied customer."
