It's mid-May, and the days of hiding beneath layers of clothing are behind us. This can only mean one thing .?.?. it's probably time for a wax. (Cue horror movie scream.)

We know, we know. Waxing is no fun. It's painful and can leave you red, sticky and irritated. Argentine Noemi Grupenmager founded Uni K Wax Center in the 1990s with this in mind, and her innovative salons dedicated to natural hair removal became go-to spots in teeny-bikini-loving Miami, and later in Manhattan.

Now, Uni K has opened its first Long Island location at 1172 Wantagh Ave. in Wantagh, and the company is planning to open eight more between Nassau and Suffolk by 2014.

Uni K uses a natural, elastic wax, brewed at their laboratory in Florida from pine resin that contains conditioning oils to moisturize. It is peeled directly off the skin and is less painful and more gentle on the skin than your usual wax, avoiding post-treatment redness on most skin types.

A small portion of wax is heated up separately for each customer, so there is no cross-contamination like in some nail salons. The Wantagh location includes private waxing rooms and a waxing lab where technicians can be seen heating up vats of the green wax.

Every service offered for women is also offered for men. Eyebrows are $17 for women and $21 for men, full legs $55 for women and $65 for men, and bikini lines $21 for women and $33 for men. They also do lip, chin, neck, nose, back, chest, Brazilian and more.

A line of moisturizers and other skin care products are available at the store. "Everything is based on making skin look beautiful," Grupenmager says.

The next Uni K Wax Center is slated for Syosset within the next three months.
