Two decades into running Yours To Treasure in Massapequa Park, Kimberly Tritto continues to refine and respond to what customers want most at her small business.
"For the first 17 and a half years, I was a true gift shop," Tritto, 55, says. "About two-and-a-half years ago, I redid the store and focused on being an all-in-one clothing and accessories boutique for women, men and kids."
Tritto estimates that the cheery, well-organized 750-square-foot retail space features 75% clothes and 25% gifts for the home, special occasions and holidays.
A lifelong Long Islander married with two adult children ages 26 and 29, Tritto says she is essentially "a one-woman band" at her entrepreneurial venture. She relies on close friends, as needed, to lend an extra hand.
"You can’t do everything yourself all the time," she says. Her daughter, Diana Tritto, handles the Instagram account that expands the shop’s reach beyond the brick-and-mortar walls. Tritto currently doesn’t maintain a website.
Opening the store, she says, was the realization of "a dream of mine." For the previous stay-at-home mom who’d also worked for an engineering firm, taking the entrepreneurial plunge in 2005 was a big challenge. "It’s a lot of work — always," she says.
Tritto offers a thoughtfully curated selection of clothes, jewelry, and gifts, all priced to be affordable to encourage repeat customers. Jeans and candles, two popular sellers, are $60 and $25 and up, respectively.
Along with poring through catalogs for fresh finds, she takes shopping trips to New York, Las Vegas and Nashville and keeps the shelves stocked with items that are distinct and different. "I love buying for the boutique," she says.
Moms, by necessity, are deft multitaskers. As the merchandiser, store clerk, bookkeeper and more at the store, Trittos says she’s learned and grown as the years have passed.
"Running your own business is just great," she says. "You make your own hours. You make the decisions. You have to put in a lot of time and effort. That’s a constant." With 20 years of experience and counting, Tritto speaks with authority.
