Makeover: A Centerport master bedroom

The master bedroom in the Centerport home of Kathy and Tom Nicolette was long overdue for a change.

"We had done it 20 years ago," says Kathy, 54. She and husband, 63, a medical testing consultant, have two adult children and two French bulldogs, Chloé and Pierre.

"Everything was just dated and tired. It had been through numerous pets, toys and our children. It just felt stagnant," Kathy Nicolette says.

She turned to designer Kelly Dall of Kelly Dall Interior Design of Greenlawn to give it a fresh look.

"If your bedroom isn't a place of respite, you'll be tired in there but not in a good way," says Dall, who thought the Nicolettes' bedroom had too much going on.

She says she was determined to create an elegant retreat for these empty nesters.

And while they wanted a nighttime retreat, the Nicolettes says they are very attached to their four-legged family members. So, Dall also had to have pet-friendly furniture and accessories.

For example, although they have white bedding, Kathy Nicolette would prefer not to use bleach, so the bedding lends itself to spot cleaning.

"The headboard is faux leather, so if they get their claws into it, it is not that expensive to replace," Dall adds.

Nicolette says the transformation has taken their bedroom from granny style to chic.

"When I walk in there, it sets a tone," Kathy Nicolette says. "It is romantic, youthful, fresh. I just feel good when I'm in there."
