Opportunities for Long Islanders to volunteer
Sign me up . . .All age groups can be part of The Lustgarten Foundation's drive to raise awareness about pancreatic cancer and generate funds for research to find a cure. The organization encourages students, scout groups, teachers and their classes to get involved.
The Foundation's 13th annual Long Island Pancreatic Cancer Research Walk starts at 9:30 a.m. Oct. 13 at Jones Beach. Volunteers are needed for setup, to register walkers, distribute refreshments at rest stops and other duties.

THE CYSTIC FIBROSIS FOUNDATION's Huntington office needs volunteers to register riders, help with setup, work at rest stops and serve as route marshals at its Cycle for Life fundraiser on Oct. 5. Bicyclists will tackle 30-, 60- and 100-mile sections of a route starting in Riverhead. Cystic Fibrosis is a chronic, genetic disorder that primarily affects the lungs and digestive systems. Monies raised from the ride will fund research for a cure.

THE AMERICAN PARKINSON DISEASE ASSOCIATION needs volunteers to help raise research funds by participating in the 2013 LI Optimism Walk & Paws Walk-A-Thon, scheduled for Oct. 27, rain or shine. Participants can walk a one-mile trail in Marjorie Post Park in Massepequa with or without a dog. Registration is 11 a.m. to noon. Parkinson's is an incurable neuromuscular disorder.
