<p> Remember, many paths are multiuse, so you’ll be sharing them with pedestrians, in-line skaters and others. State law requires children younger than 14 to wear helmets. </p> 
<p> The Island also has more than 175 miles of mountain biking trails, many maintained by Concerned Long Island Mountain Bicyclists (CLIMB). Free unless noted. </p> 
<h2> <strong>BELMONT LAKE STATE PARK</strong>, North Babylon </h2> 
<p> <strong>MILES:</strong> 7.6 </p> 
<p> Picture-postcard scenery, a stone bridge and a small waterfall are highlights of an overall flat loop that also runs through woods flanked by benches and exercise stations. Lock up the bikes and stop to rent pedal boats, rowboats or kayaks available through Oct. 9 weekends and holidays; restrooms but no food concession. <strong>Fee:</strong> $8 parking weekends and holidays through Oct. 9. </p> 
<h2> <strong>BETHPAGE BIKEWAY</strong>, Massapequa to Woodbury </h2> 
<p> <strong>MILES:</strong> 12.7 </p> 
<p> The bikeway through the Massapequa Preserve features a shady trail next to a tranquil stream. Continue north along the Bethpage State Parkway through Farmingdale to Bethpage State Park, passing its renowned golf courses. Ride north through the woodlands of Bethpage State Park and open meadows of Trail View State Park. Both the northern and southern approaches to the park have some short, steep hills. The bikeway has restrooms and picnic grounds in Bethpage State Park, but no food concession. <strong>Fee:</strong> $8 parking at Bethpage State Park weekends and holidays through Nov. 5. </p> 
<h2> <strong>BETHPAGE STATE PARK</strong>, Farmingdale </h2> 
<p> <strong>MILES:</strong>&nbsp;20 </p> 
<p> Trails are two-way and multiuse, and can be used on mountain bikes; be courteous about yielding the right of way. The most family-friendly stretch of this flat terrain begins at the Bethpage State Park picnic area and runs north through the park. <strong>Fee:</strong> Parking for picnic area: $8 per car weekends and holidays through Nov. 5. </p> 
<h2> <strong>CALVERTON MOUNTAIN BIKE TRAIL</strong>, Calverton </h2> 
<p> <strong>MILES:</strong> 8.5 </p> 
<p> Beginner-to-intermediate single-track loop on Route 25. The loop is good for beginners with a little experience. Additional 2 miles of optional advanced hill climbs. DEC permit required.&nbsp; </p> 
<h2> <strong>CATHEDRAL PINES COUNTY PARK</strong>, Middle Island </h2> 
<p> <strong>MILES:</strong> 9 </p> 
<p> Families with older kids can challenge their legs on this mountain bike trail at the headwaters of the Carmans River. Optional trails at Cathedral Pines have hills. All riders are required to wear helmets, and eye protection is recommended. The trail has restrooms but no food concession.&nbsp; </p> 
<h2> <strong>CAUMSETT STATE HISTORIC PARK PRESERVE</strong>, Huntington </h2> 
<p> <strong>MILES:</strong> 27&nbsp; </p> 
<p> Situated on a scenic peninsula, one of the trails is a 2.7-mile circular loop between the Dairy Barn and the Marshall Field Estate, with breathtaking views of Long Island Sound and miles of pathways winding through woodlands, meadows, shoreline and salt marsh. Stop at the Masters Garage building for picnic tables, beverage vending machines and restrooms. Picnic tables also are scattered throughout the park. <strong>Fee:</strong> $8 per car weekends and holidays through Oct. 9. </p> 
<h2> <strong>CONNETQUOT SHARED-USE PATH</strong> </h2> 
<p> <strong>MILES:</strong> 2.5 </p> 
<p> Trail parallels Sunrise Highway between Connetquot Avenue and Oakdale-Bohemia Road, with a connection to Connetquot River State Park. <strong>Fee:</strong> $8 parking daily through Oct. 9; weekends and holidays through Nov. 19. </p> 
<h2> <strong>EASTPORT MOUNTAIN BIKE TRAIL</strong> </h2> 
<p> <strong>MILES:</strong> 8.5 </p> 
<p> East Moriches-Riverhead Road (County Road 51). Beginner-to-intermediate single track. DEC permit required.&nbsp; </p> 
<h2> <strong>EDGEWOOD PRESERVE</strong>, Deer Park </h2> 
<p> <strong>MILES:</strong> 17+ of mountain bike trails&nbsp; </p> 
<p> Entrance located on Commack Road. Beginner, intermediate and advanced mountain bike trails with lots of single track. Also 13 miles of additional advanced loops, of which 3 miles are black diamond trails for those with advanced biking skills. DEC permit required.&nbsp; </p> 
<h2> <strong>EISENHOWER PARK</strong>, East Meadow </h2> 
<p> <strong>MILES:&nbsp;</strong>More than 10 miles of multiuse paths&nbsp; </p> 
<p> Multiuse paths connect soccer and baseball fields, where spectators can watch amateur teams on weekends. Teach the kids about history from World War II to 9/11 at the Veterans Memorial in the park. Eisenhower has restrooms and vending machines. </p> 
<h2> <strong>EPCAL PATH</strong>, Calverton </h2> 
<p> <strong>MILES:</strong> 3 </p> 
<p> A shared-use bike path loops around the 2,900-acre Enterprise Park, through the pine barrens of eastern Suffolk County. Parking available in Grumman Memorial Park (at Routes 25 and 25A), Veterans Memorial Park (5789 Old Country Rd.) and Isaac Dog Park (off Route 25). </p> 
<h2> <strong>HECKSCHER STATE PARK</strong>, East Islip </h2> 
<p> <strong>MILES:</strong> 4.5 </p> 
<p> Paved, multiuse trails attract bicyclists, walkers and nature lovers. Cycle to a panoramic view of Great South Bay. Osprey nests tower over the trail near Field 7 and the park campgrounds. Playgrounds are near parking fields 1, 4 and 6. Restrooms available on the park grounds. <strong>Fee:</strong> $8 per car weekends 8 a.m.-4 p.m. through Oct. 9. </p> 
<h2> <strong>HEMPSTEAD LAKE STATE PARK</strong>, West Hempstead </h2> 
<p> <strong>MILES:</strong> 2.4 </p> 
<p> The bike path connects shaded picnic areas, children’s playgrounds, tennis courts and basketball courts. It winds around McDonald Pond, where ages 16 and older need a freshwater fishing license. Restrooms available at the park. <strong>Fee:</strong> $8 parking weekends and holidays through Oct. 9. </p> 
<h2> <strong>HEMPSTEAD TPKE. SHARED-USE PATH</strong>, Hempstead </h2> 
<p> <strong>MILES:</strong> 1.5 </p> 
<p> Traverses the north side of Hempstead Turnpike between Hofstra University, Nassau Coliseum and Eisenhower Park (between Merrick Avenue and Oak Street, Uniondale).&nbsp; </p> 
<h2> <strong>JONES BEACH BIKEWAY</strong>, Wantagh </h2> 
<p> <strong>MILES:</strong> 9 </p> 
<p> Take the Wantagh Parkway Shared-Use Path to Jones Beach, then stay on the extension on the north side of Ocean Parkway and pedal another 3.6 miles to Tobay Beach, where there are more restaurants and a playground. The bikeway has three &quot;hills&quot; as you pedal over bridges.&nbsp; </p> 
<h2> <strong>JONES BEACH STATE PARK BOARDWALK</strong>, Wantagh </h2> 
<p> <strong>MILES</strong> 2 </p> 
<p> Bike or stroll the boardwalk with access to ocean swimming, swimming pool, miniature golf, WildPlay Adventure Park, shuffleboard, basketball and East Games Area featuring boccie ball, shuffleboard, paddle tennis and cornhole. <strong>Fee:</strong> $8 weekends and holidays through Nov. 5. </p> 
<h2> <strong>KINGS PARK BIKE AND HIKE TRAIL</strong> </h2> 
<p> <strong>MILES</strong> 1.4 </p> 
<p> Hilly trail connects downtown Kings Park with Nissequogue River State Park. Follows the old railroad spur from Route 25A, just east of Church Street, to St. Johnland Road. Trail runs through the former Kings Park Psychiatric Center into Nissequogue River State Park. <strong>Fee:</strong> $8 weekends and holidays through Oct. 9. </p> 
<h2> <strong>LONG BEACH BOARDWALK</strong> </h2> 
<p> <strong>MILES:</strong> 2.2 </p> 
<p> Wide, clearly marked bike lanes zoom down the middle of the city’s historic boardwalk, rebuilt after Superstorm Sandy. Restrooms available along the boardwalk.&nbsp; </p> 
<h2> <strong>MERRICK AVENUE SHARED-USE PATH</strong> </h2> 
<p> <strong>MILES:</strong> 1.7 </p> 
<p> A shared-use path along the western perimeter of Eisenhower Park connects with the Hempstead Turnpike Shared-Use Path.&nbsp; </p> 
<h2> <strong>MITCHEL FIELD SHARED-USE PATH</strong>, Uniondale </h2> 
<p> <strong>MILES:</strong> 5.6 </p> 
<p> Connects to the Hempstead Turnpike Shared-Use Path as well as Nassau Coliseum, Nassau Community College, Cradle of Aviation Museum, Long Island Children’s Museum, Nassau County Firefighters Museum, Eisenhower Park and a multiuse path along Merrick Avenue.&nbsp; </p> 
<h2> <strong>NORTH SHORE RAIL TRAIL</strong> </h2> 
<p> <strong>MILES:</strong> 10 </p> 
<p> Shared multiuse recreational trail runs along the former Wading River railway corridor from Mount Sinai to Wading River. The trail route runs parallel to Route 25A, from Crystal Brook Hollow Road and Hallock Avenue in Mount Sinai to Wading River Manor Road in Wading River.&nbsp; </p> 
<h2> <strong>OYSTER BAY TO BAYVILLE</strong> </h2> 
<p> <strong>MILES:</strong> 2 </p> 
<p> Park at Beekman Beach in Oyster Bay and take the new shared-use path along the water, next to West Shore Road, to the Bayville bridge. Some portions are very narrow, so be courteous to walkers.&nbsp; </p> 
<h2> <strong>ROCKY POINT MOUNTAIN BIKING TRAIL</strong> </h2> 
<p> <strong>MILES:</strong> 13 </p> 
<p> Explore trails available for beginners to advanced riders through the Rocky Point Pine Barrens State Forest. Access is available at trailheads off both Route 25A and Rocky Point Road.&nbsp; </p> 
<h2> <strong>ROUTE 347 PARKS TO PORTS GREENWAY</strong> </h2> 
<p> <strong>MILES:</strong> 3.5 </p> 
<p> A shared-use path paralleling Route 347 between Town Line Road in Hauppauge and Gibbs Pond Road in Nesconset, and 0.8 miles between Terryville Road and Davis Avenue in Port Jefferson Station. The shared-use path has extensive landscaping, rain gardens and solar-powered bus shelters with LED street lighting. The path is being constructed in stages and when fully built by 2033, it will extend 15 miles between Hauppauge and Port Jefferson Station. </p> 
<h2> <strong>SETAUKET-PORT JEFFERSON GREENWAY</strong>, Port Jefferson Station </h2> 
<p> <strong>MILES:</strong> 3.3 </p> 
<p> Hilly trail gives a good aerobic workout from Route 25A at Limroy Lane in Setauket to Route 112 at Hallock Avenue.&nbsp; </p> 
<h2> <strong>STONY BROOK UNIVERSITY</strong> </h2> 
<p> <strong>MILES:</strong> 6 </p> 
<p> The Paul Simons Memorial Bike Path — pavement for biking, running and in-line skating — circles the 1,100-acre campus. </p> 
<h2> <strong>TRAIL VIEW STATE PARK</strong>, Woodbury-Cold Spring Harbor </h2> 
<p> <strong>MILES:</strong> 7.4 </p> 
<p> Access at 8101 Jericho Tpke., Woodbury, and near Cold Spring Harbor Library. Trails are two-way and often used by hikers; be courteous. </p> 
<h2> <strong>VALLEY STREAM STATE PARK/HENDRICKSON PARK SHARED-USE PATH</strong> </h2>

This new Riverhead spot, known as Waterdrinker North Fork, is operating on property leased from&nbsp;the Garden of Eve Organic Farm and Market. <br /> Waterdrinker has&nbsp;expanded the family activities at the new&nbsp; location, says farm manager Marc Weiss. “We’re going to be kicking into high gear in mid-September. We’ll have our haunted corn maze;&nbsp;we’ll have a playground;&nbsp;we’ll have pumpkin picking,” he says. </p>

<p> The original Waterdrinker location in Manorville has been in operation since 2018. &quot;We love the North Fork and thought we could bring something new,&quot; Weiss says of expanding. An Adventure Avenue&nbsp;at the Riverhead location&nbsp; offers jump pads, giant basketball hoops, a John Deere tractor and Noah’s Ark play sculpture. It’s&nbsp;double the size of&nbsp;the former Garden of Eve activity center,&nbsp;&quot;with twice as many activities. We bought all new playground equipment. We’re revamping their raceway pedal cars,” he says. A miniature golf course will be open by mid-September. </p> 
<p> The farm also has opened&nbsp;Beer Garden at Waterdrinker North Fork, offering beer from Long Island Farm Brewery for the grown-ups, he says. </p> 
<p> &quot;I thought it was great,&quot; says Jeanine Sabatino, 41, a stay-at-home mother from West Babylon who attended opening day earlier this month with her husband, Gaetano, 41, an information officer, and their two daughters, Eliana, 5, and Aurelia, 3. &quot;My kids loved the inflatable slides. I loved the beer part.&quot; </p>

<p> Erica Seinfeld's in-laws live in Aquebogue, so the 34-year-old teacher from&nbsp;Forest Hills, her husband, Joe, 34, a marketing manager, and their son, Hayden, 2, are often in the area. Seinfeld says she was excited to have a new option to explore when visiting.&nbsp; </p> 
<p> &quot;For a 2-year-old, having all these different play structures — a jeep, a boat, an airplane, a bus — he really liked that,&quot; she says. &quot;Everything seemed clean and new. I just love the market, too.&quot; She also says it's nice that the location also offers a beer garden option. </p> 
<h2> TIME FOR CHANGE </h2>

<p> Eve Kaplan-Walbrecht of Garden of Eve&nbsp;says she wanted to make her farming operation less stressful and complex, so she thought having Waterdrinker take over part of the farm operations would be a good match. </p> 
<p> “We opened up the Garden of Eve farm market in 2005, which was the year my first child was born. Now, he’s headed off to college,” she says. She’s retaining the vegetable farming on 45 acres and continuing the community supported agriculture program and sales at area farmers markets. Waterdrinker has agreed to continue to farm organically on the land they are leasing, both Kaplan-Walbrecht and Weiss say. </p> 
<p> Waterdrinker has&nbsp;taken&nbsp;over the market and events. “We’re doing a lot of the same things we do at our Waterdrinker location in Manorville,” Weiss says. </p> 
<p> Weiss says he plans to move the Pirate corn maze that has been at the Manorville location over to the Riverhead location and create a new corn maze at the original Waterdrinker. Its theme will be a nod to the other activities at the two properties. </p> 
<p> It will be called The Tulip Tunnel of Terror,&nbsp;a reference to Waterdrinker’s annual Tulip Festival. “Some ghosts unfortunately took over the tunnel,” he says. There’ll also be a vampire, a play on Garden of Eve’s annual Garlic Festival. </p> 
<p> Both Waterdrinker locations will have new photo opportunities, Weiss says.&nbsp; </p>

<p>As the seasons change, the hiking trails fill up at Long Island parks. The cooler weather offers a respite from summer's heat, opening a world of nature to explore come fall and winter.</p> 
<p>&quot;The cool weather provides for a healthy and enjoyable experience,&quot; says George Gorman Jr., regional director of Long Island's state parks. <strong></strong></p> 
<p>Tom Casey of West Sayville, vice president of the Long Island Greenbelt Trail Conference, says woodland trails, including in the pine barrens of eastern Long Island, also are drawing legions of winter hikers. Woodland trails remain free of ice in winter because “they are sandy in a lot of places, and water filters right through” into the ground.</p> 
<p>Here are five ideas for fall and winter hikes offering&nbsp;wildlife sightings and trail views ranging from charming to awe-inspiring.&nbsp;Parking is free unless noted.</p> 
<h2>Best hike for a workout: Trail View State Park</h2>

<p><strong>Distance:</strong> 7.4&nbsp;miles </p> 
<p>Had enough of the treadmill?&nbsp;You can burn calories amid actual scenery, hiking the rolling hills of Trail View State Park in Woodbury. Trail View, a narrow 400-acre belt of green space, sends hikers along wooded hills on the north and past ponds and streams near its south end. With comparatively rugged terrain — for Long Island at least — and some hills rising to several hundred feet above sea level, it can be challenging for inexperienced hikers, Gorman says.&nbsp;</p> 
<h2>Remote hike:&nbsp;Sunken Forest, Fire Island National Seashore</h2> 
<p><em>Accessible via the Sayville Ferry Service to Sailors Haven (Saturdays and Sundays through Oct. 9) and Cherry Grove (Saturdays and Sundays); 631-589-0810, <a href="http://sayvilleferry.com">sayvilleferry.com</a>.</em></p>

<p>In winter, it takes a few extra steps to get to the solitude of the Sunken Forest. The Sayville Ferry Service to adjacent Sailors Haven isn’t running after Oct. 9, so take the ferry instead to Cherry Grove, then walk west. The trail is part boardwalk, through a rare maritime forest dominated by centuries-old American holly trees, and half paved path between the dunes.</p> 
<h2>Family-friendly hike:&nbsp;Belmont Lake State Park</h2> 
<p><em>Southern State Parkway Exit 38, North Babylon;&nbsp;631-667-5055, <a href="http://parks.ny.gov">parks.ny.gov</a>.</em></p> 
<p><strong>Distance:</strong> 7.6 miles of multiuse trails</p>

<p>Belmont Lake is your classic walk in the park. A flat path loops through the woods and then wraps around the lake, making it an easy jaunt for hikers of all ages. The trail passes benches for impromptu rest stops&nbsp;and a pair of cannons captured from a British warship during the War of 1812, and then goes over a bubbly waterfall at the south end of the park.</p> 
<h2>Hike with a great view:&nbsp;Orient Beach State Park</h2>

<p>For a quintessential North Fork adventure, hike the 2-mile service road flanked by Gardiners Bay and its lighthouses to the south, and a rare maritime forest to the north, as you’re serenaded by honks from the Cross Sound Ferry. Continue past the parking lot to the beach for another 2 miles to the tip of the peninsula for views of the bay, nearby harbors, Shelter Island and the curiously shaped Long Beach Bar “Bug Light” Lighthouse that's squatting on a rock pile just offshore.</p> 
<h2>Wildlife hike: Smith Point County Park</h2>

Foliage photo-ops abound — don't miss the seasonal view of the Nicoll Grist Mill, one of the last of its kind on Long Island. Guided historic tours of Southside Sportsmen's Clubhouse and Grist Mill are available from September through June ($4 a person) on the first and third Sundays of the month. </p>

<p> If fresh apples and fresh air aren’t enough enticement to visit a Long Island farm store during harvest season, the promise of freshly baked or fried cider doughnuts should seal the deal. </p> 
<p> Served plain, glazed or sprinkled with cinnamon sugar, cider doughnuts have a slightly acidic tang and a tender texture, both of which come from the cider in the batter. Some orchards and farm stands, including the ones below, have become almost as famous for this treat as they are for the fruit from their trees. Call ahead to make sure they haven't run out. </p>

<p> &quot;Peepers&quot; — that's what New Englanders call people from Long Island, New York City and points south who flock by the tens of thousands each October to greet fall’s changing colors. While the views do seem to grow increasingly intense as one heads north, there are some places to catch this show right here at home — and it can be spectacular. </p> 
<p> &quot;There’s&nbsp;360-degree views out here, salty air, all kinds of wildlife,&quot; says Lars Svanberg, of Main Beach Surf and Sport, who rents out kayaks and provides guided tours by appointment in Wainscott. “It’s uncrowded … one of the best-kept secrets of the Hamptons are its paddling perspectives from shore.” </p> 
<p> Indeed, as October begins, the trees and bushes along Long Island’s back-bay coves, tidal creeks, lakes and ponds blossom in colors so rich you can practically taste them. Every tree, branch and leaf is distinct. Some seem to burst forth with color like juice from a fresh-bitten fruit. Others turn more slowly, gracefully morphing from green to yellow, orange or crimson. It makes for a delightful mix that can have a calming effect, melting away the stress and pressures of daily life. </p> 
<p> &quot;Less than 100 miles from New York City, it’s easy to lose yourself in the timeless beauty of autumn‘s glory as you glide through the calm waters of Coecles Harbor,&quot; notes Adam Mills, the owner of Kayak Shelter Island. &quot;From the water, you can access gorgeous views and pristine areas not accessible from land.&quot; </p> 
<p> “Fall paddling on Long Island is a beautiful experience,” says Sheila Malone, owner of the Moku Loa Paddle Tribe paddleboard rental company in Oakdale. She further points out that “boat traffic is quieter and everything around you is more peaceful. You really get the chance to take in the incredible wildlife on the river, everything from turtles and osprey to the occasional fox or deer. Of course, the colors during that time of year are even more beautiful and fall sunsets shouldn’t be missed.” </p> 
<p> For those who already have a watercraft, heading out to experience fall’s colors in all their glory is as easy as finding a launch site and pushing off the shore. Those who don’t own a kayak or paddleboard can easily rent one or book a tour. </p>

<p> This fall marks the return of the possible 1,000-pound pumpkin at Hicks Nurseries in Westbury, the debut of an apple cider doughnut ice-cream sandwich at the Jericho Cider Mill and the expansion of the Waterdrinker Family Farm in Manorville to a second location in Riverhead. <p> “We encourage all Long Island home pumpkin growers to bring their pumpkins, no matter what size, to be weighed and judged in front of our audience,” says Karen Musgrave, Hicks marketing coordinator. “The largest pumpkin wins.” </p> 
<p> The competition returns to Hicks at 11 a.m. Oct. 15 for the first time since before the pandemic. In the past, some pumpkins have clocked in above 1,000 pounds, Musgrave says, and had to be lifted to the scale by the farm’s forklift. </p> 
<p> In addition, Hicks will host its annual pet parade at 5 p.m. Oct. 18. Participants are welcome to bring their dogs, cats, fish and birds dressed in costume for the parade and take a photo with Otto the Ghost. </p> 
<p> Visitors may notice a new look at Hicks this fall, as the farm has redone the whole store, Musgrave says. The entrance will be all glass and there will be all new floors, fixtures, lighting, signage and checkout area. </p> 
<p> Otto the Ghost will be featured in a new, animated story called “Otto’s New Neighbor.” Visitors can experience Otto’s walk-through story daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 16 though Oct. 29. <p> It’s hard to imagine an improvement on the cider doughnut, but Jericho Cider Mill has upped its fall treat game this year by turning its cider doughnuts into ice cream sandwiches. </p> 
<p> “We slice the cider doughnut in half and put cinnamon ice cream in the middle,” says general manager Ted Ketsoglou. “Our cider doughnuts are very popular, our ice cream is very popular … so we put them together. It started selling.” </p> 
<p> The premade items are offered as single packages from the cider mill’s freezer for $4.99 each. It takes about three minutes for the doughnut to thaw enough to eat the sandwich. It&nbsp;will be a permanent offering at the cider mill, Ketsoglou says. </p>

<p> Waterdrinker is leasing property from the Garden of Eve Organic Farm and Market in Riverhead, rebranding it as Waterdrinker North Fork. </p> 
<p> Waterdrinker will expand the family activities at the Riverhead location, says Waterdrinker manager Marc Weiss. “We’ll have our haunted corn maze; we’ll have a playground; we’ll have pumpkin picking,” he says.&nbsp;Activity Alley will offer jump pads, giant basketball hoops, a John Deere tractor and Noah’s Ark play sculpture. “It’s twice as big, with twice as many activities. We bought all new playground equipment. We’re revamping their raceway pedal cars. There’s talk to do a mini golf course like we have at our other location,” he says. </p> 
<p> Weiss says he plans to move the pirate corn maze that has been at the Manorville location over to the Riverhead location and create a new corn maze at the original Waterdrinker. Its theme will be a nod to the other activities at the two properties.&nbsp;It will be called The Tulip Tunnel of Terror,&nbsp;a reference to Waterdrinker’s annual Tulip Festival. “Some ghosts unfortunately took over the tunnel,” he says.&nbsp;There’ll also be a vampire, a play on the annual Garlic Festival at Garden of Eve. </p> 
<p> The Garlic Festival will be moved to the Manorville location just for this year — 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 16 and 17 — before returning to Riverhead next fall, Weiss says. The vampire that remains in the Corn Maze is immune to the repelling power of garlic, he jokes. </p> 
<p> Entry to the Manorville location (663 Wading River Rd.) will be $20 per person for ages 2 and older; entry cost for&nbsp;the Riverhead location has yet to be determined, Weiss says. <p> Get a glimpse of the real Gilded Age by touring one of Long Island’s Gold Coast mansions, where it’s tempting to&nbsp;spread a blanket in the gardens and soak in the luxurious surroundings. <p> Pickleball was created in 1965 by three dads: Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell and Barney McCallum. What started out as a game for their children has grown in popularity&nbsp;throughout the&nbsp;United States, including on Long Island.&nbsp; </p> 
<p> The game is played with a &quot;perforated plastic ball and composite or wooden paddles about twice the size of Ping-Pong paddles on a court with the net set to a height of 34 inches at the center,” according to Chuck Menke, chief marketing director at USA Pickleball, a national governing body of the sport. </p> 
<p> Frank Milillo, owner of Long Island Pickleball Pros, which hosts clinics around the Island, says the game is easy to play and learn. &quot;Pickleball can be as competitive as you want it, but more important, it's an extremely social sport,&quot; he says. </p>

<p> When Amy Kappel signed up for an indoor rock climbing class, she figured it would be a one-time experiment. </p> 
<p> “It was on my list of sports that I wanted to try,” says Kappel, who already ran and danced to keep fit. But since she first hit the climbing wall at Island Rock, a facility in Plainview, she’s been back at least a dozen times. </p> 
<p> She has no plans to stop. She bought her own climbing gear and feels that she’s become part of a community. “Rock climbing is very challenging and very addicting,” she says. </p> 
<p> Many others agree. Local gyms that offer indoor climbing — either exclusively or as part of its overall activities menu — report that interest by beginners and more seasoned climbers is on the rise. </p> 
<p> Climbing is a physical and mental challenge for all ages and body types, and that’s part of the appeal, according to industry insiders. The fact that the sport was introduced at the Tokyo Olympics gave it a global profile. </p> 
<h2> KNOW BEFORE YOU CLIMB </h2> 
<p> “A lot of people are saying, ‘Oh, this is like something that’s an actual fun activity,’ ” says Liam Bello,&nbsp;shift manager and head coach of the youth climbing team at Gravity Vault, a rock gym in Melville. “So now they’re looking to give it a try. Whenever you’re looking to learn something new,” he adds, “you always want some instruction and to work with someone who knows more than you.” </p> 
<p> Besides being rain- and sunproof, indoor climbing gyms offer various versions of sport. Some use ropes, some don’t — they all carry risks. Facilities require that you sign a waiver before you climb. </p> 
<p> For bouldering, or unroped climbing, you’re relatively low to the ground and surrounded by crash pads if you fall. In top roping, climbers make their way up color-coded routes of varying degrees of difficulty with the rope already through an anchor at the top of the wall. </p> 
<p> “Climbing is definitely an emerging industry,” says Ross Slotnick, general manager and vice president of Island Rock in Plainview. “Business is certainly rocking.” </p> 
<p> Part of that is owed&nbsp;to necessity. Outdoor climbing options are limited on Long Island, he says, adding, “Geographically speaking, the area isn’t ideal for rock climbing.” </p> 
<h2> CONNECTING UP HIGH </h2> 
<p> Denise DeLiberti of Seaford has been rock climbing for over a year and she has mightier forearms and grip strength to show for it. There have been other elevating payoffs. </p> 
<p> One is a bracing blast of nostalgia. “I loved to climb trees when I was growing up in Levittown,” DeLiberti says. “It was one of my favorite things to do.” Maples and oaks have given way to rock walls (sometimes, out-of-town cliffs) for a similar rush. </p> 
<p> The other is a communal buzz. “Climbing is just a very supportive community,” she says. “Everybody is always cheering and encouraging everybody else. I really like that part of it.” </p> 
<p> Paul Dlug has about a decade of rock climbing experience under his belt. He co-founded a meetup rock climbing group, Climb On! Long Island.&nbsp;It meets weekly at Island Rock. </p> 
<p> “The sport has been growing like crazy,” Dlug says. “The perception is that rock climbers are risk takers, but that’s not the case for most people in my experience. It’s about the challenge and exploring personal limitations. There’s a lot of problem-solving involved in climbing,” he continues. “You learn something new and grow every time you’re climbing, and that’s something that’s very satisfying.” </p> 
<p> Kappel seconds that notion. “I remember the first time I went,” she says. “I came out and I was exhausted. My arms were shaking. I was like, ‘I’m never going to be able to do that route.’ ” </p> 
<p> In time, she mastered it, urged on by fellow climbers. “I found that you can get pretty good pretty quick,” she says. Bottom line: That rocks. </p>
