Most elite runners say the Long Island Marathon course is relatively flat, what with the long, lonely stretch along Wantagh Parkway, and the running-friendly confines of Eisenhower Park. But Gabrielle Russo has found a way to make this race all about conquering one big mountain after another.
One year after coming in second, Russo, the Stony Brook University assistant professor of anthropology, won the whole thing in the women’s race in 2:50:40, accomplishing the unlikely feat of shaving nearly five minutes off a personal best time and getting one step closer to a goal of qualifying for the 2020 Olympic Trials; the required time is 2:45:00. The Long Island Marathon last year was only her second marathon — a product, in part, of taking four years off to complete graduate work — but she won the Suffolk Marathon months later, and is recently coming off winning a Long Island-based 50k ultra-marathon, and completing a grueling Boston Marathon course in high winds and pouring rain. 
Between the Long Island race and Suffolk, Russo, 33, of a Patchogue, but originally of Pennsylvania, is well on her way to becoming one of the best distance runners in the country thanks to a young career that she forged in her adopted home. Thomas Rammelkamp, 28, won the men’s race, finishing in 2:33:13. Rammelkamp, who grew up in Miller Place but is now working as a physical therapist in Falls Church, Va., last came in fourth in the 2013 Long Island Marathon, a race his brother, Derek, won. 
“It was just exciting,” said Rammelkamp, who said this was his first marathon victory. In many ways, redemption was woven throughout the 26.21 miles, since hypothermia forced him to drop out of the Boston Marathon near Mile 15 three weeks ago. “I just wanted to come out and put in an honest effort,” he said, adding that he ran track for Miller Place High School where he graduated in 2007. “I didn’t put any pressure on myself . . . It was a lot more relaxing here today.”
Over 530 runners completed the marathon in temperate conditions, a departure from last year’s rainy course. Manhattan’s Narciso Mejia, 32, came in second in the men’s race, in 2:37:08, and Julio Sauce, 46, of Brooklyn, was third, in 2:42:55. Sauce, hailing from Ecuador, said it was either his seventh or eighth Long Island Marathon, but a lifetime of marathon running: “More than 40,” he said, smiling, when asked to guess how many he’s run. A New York Times profile pegged Sauce, a restaurant worker, as one of the fastest non-profession runners in the five boroughs. 
Jazmin Abraham, 36, of Upper Saddle River, NJ, came in second and Catherine Chua, 42, of Richmond Hill, NY was third. 
Russo said she didn’t come in expecting to win. Running — and winning — the USATF 50K Road Championships in March was plenty grueling (that’s over 31 miles). The weather during the Boston Marathon, in April, wrecked the best-laid plans of even the most elite runners. But still, she came back for more, waiting until the final days to register for this last race of her training cycle.
“This is still pretty new to me,” she said. “It’s pretty fantastic to cross the finish line. That’s everyone’s goal. Not matter what speed you’re running or what your goal is out there time-wise, you just want to get out there across the finish . . . I really didn’t know what to expect and today’s goal was to run by feel, and this was a really good learning experience for me because I’m learning to gauge my effort level. I got five minute (personal record time) today, and five more minutes and I can” qualify for the Olympic Trials.
Five minutes off a personal best is an eternity for athlete who runs three hours at a time, but on Sunday, Russo proved that sometimes, it’s as easy as putting one foot in front of the other.

Barrett Kemp wasn’t even sure he’d be able to run Sunday. After passing out recently while on a run, Kemp spent five days last week at Stony Brook University Medical Center where he underwent tests on his heart. He was released on Tuesday, deemed perfectly healthy and cleared to run. 
Five days later, Kemp placed second in the Long Island half-marathon in one hour, thirteen minutes, four seconds. 
“I’m just happy that the race happened,” said Kemp, 23, a medical student at Stony Brook University who lives in Centereach.
Originally from Shinglehouse, Pennsylvania, Kemp moved to Long Island last year after graduating from the University of Buffalo where he ran track and cross country. The half marathon was his first race since last spring 
“It was amazing,” he said. “It was so much fun. I love racing. Although, I wore flats, which are really rough on your calves. My calves locked up so much at the end of the race. But, it was really nice.”
Kemp said he led for the first 12 miles of the 13.1 mile race, but was caught late by winner Galo Vasquez of New Paltz, who finished in 1:12:24.
“He just had a lot of gas in the tank,” Kemp said. “He ran an amazing race.”
Kemp said he loves living on Long Island and was really impressed with the course. 
“I thought it was really nice,” he said. “It was really flat, which was great because where I come from is all hills. There was this one stretch that was a straight three miles and I was going crazy because it was kind of boring. But, other than that, I thought they did a great job. The spectators were great. It was fun.”

Fan turnout was good at Sunday morning’s Long Island Marathon, but for Manhasset’s Aileen Barry, two spectators in particular helped make the day special.
Two of Barry’s three children were on hand to watch her win the women’s half-marathon in a time of 1:17:42. “The baby’s 10 months old. Two were here watching,” said Barry, 36, who was wearing a bracelet with their names on it. “They don’t often get to come out to the races, so seeing them was awesome.”
Barry said her background was in shorter races, so running half-marathons is part of a training program to prepare for a marathon in Duluth, Minnesota next month. From there, she will try to get a qualifying time for Olympic trials.
She said that the responsibilities of raising a family — her other children are six and three years old — have changed her training approach, and she said jokingly her goal is “just getting to the starting line in one piece.”
Added Barry: “When I crossed the finish line, I just said ‘thank God this is over,’ but it’s 10 times more fun when I run well.”
Having two of her biggest fans there to watch helped.
<h4>Vasquez wins men’s half-marathon</h4>
Galo Vasquez said he had not run a half-marathon in five years, but that was hardly evident Sunday.
Vasquez, 22, a student and former cross country runner at SUNY New Paltz, won the men’s half-marathon with a time of 1:12.24. He said he also edged his previous personal best of 1:15.

“I got a solid month of training before I came here, but it’s been a while,” said the Westchester product. “So I’m happy. I’m feeling great about this.”
Earlier in the day, Westbury’s Petrus Cesarion won the men’s 10K in 32:22.

Peter Hawkins’ inspirational journey returned to a familiar location Sunday morning
The Malverne resident completed what he said was either his 25th or 26th marathon in 2 hours, 11.11 minutes, the best finish for a traditional wheelchair athlete.
“You just make up your mind and go for it,” said Hawkins, who was paralyzed from just above the waist in a car accident in 1981. The former high school football player turned to wheelchair racing after the accident and has participated in races around the world.
“I compete and I go out there, not because I’m in a wheelchair, but just because I’m a competitive person and I enjoy being out there,” Hawkins said. “And this is my local marathon so I love coming back every year . . . It’s a great race with great people.”
Hawkins also said the weather and course conditions were ideal.
“We had the best weather I can remember. There was very little wind, the temperature was perfect and no rain,” he said. “I have to thank whoever is responsible for paving the Wantagh Parkway because it was awesome.”

Hand-crank racing has become an increasingly big part of Peter Gagliardo’s life and his results reflect this.
Gagliardo, who races in a hand crank, had the top finish in the marathon for a handicapped athlete on Sunday. He said it was his 35th marathon overall and third Long Island Marathon.
“I’ve been racing for the past eight or nine years, but I’ve really gotten into it for the last three,” said Gagliardo, who suffered a spinal injury in 2006 and uses a wheelchair when he is not racing.
A hand crank is a three-wheeled device that allows athletes to use their hands to pedal.

Mejia is certainly happy now. Since the 2016 L.I. Marathon, when Mejia ran a 2:44:30, he said he has set new personal records every time he’s competed. This included a 2:42:45 in the most recent New York City Marathon.
He’s also been motivated by his son and daughter, who both ran the mile on Saturday. “I want to set an example,” he said.
“I see her training and pushing herself. I want to do the same,” he said of his daughter. “My son doesn’t like running as much, but he did the mile with my daughter and they both did excellent. They’re the inspiration for me.”

Twice was nice, but three was even better for Kelly Perno-Grosser. The 37-year-old from Seaford won her third consecutive 10K title at the Long Island Marathon Sunday morning. Perno-Grosser broke the tape in 40 minutes, 9 seconds. 
“I was really trying to break 39:20, but I really wanted to get the three [in a row] just to say that I’ve done that in my life,” Perno-Grosser said.
Training is a labor of love for the Plainedge High School math teacher. She wakes up most mornings at 4:30 a.m in order to put in the work for the sport she loves so dearly. Twice a week, she attends Orangetheory fitness classes in Merrick. The workout combines sprinting and weight lifting. She said that her new routine has absolutely made her stronger, but has yet to lower her times. 
Last week, she took it easier than she normally would. With a big race coming up, the defending champion knew that tiring out her body would be counterproductive. 
“This week is a taper week,” Perno-Grosser said. “I didn’t do any weights or anything. I just tried to run easy and build in the energy in the rest of my legs. They say the more rest, the better for a race.”
Although she would have liked a small rain shower to cool off, Perno-Grosser said the cloudy conditions were good for running — with one minor exception. 
“It was very humid,” she said. “It got really hot when Mile 3 hit. We were all kind of like, ‘Oh, boy. It’s getting hotter than we thought.’ ”

Cheryl Donald was 32 seconds too late in her quest to run the Kentucky Derby Marathon in under four hours and score a personal milestone.
But at the RXR Long Island Marathon on Sunday, the Hofstra graduate who lives in Bushwick, Brooklyn, crossed the finish line in 3 hours, 59 minutes and 13 seconds.
“I almost cried; I’ve been trying so hard,” said Donald, 42, a marriage and family counseling therapist who trains by running 200 miles a month and has finished eight marathons since 2014. “Long Island must have been the holy grail.”
Scenes of triumph, cheering and celebratory drinking played out Sunday as thousands of runners completed the 26.2-mile marathon, half-marathon and 10K under cloudy skies. The races all began at 8 a.m. near NYCB Live’s Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale and ended across from Parking Field 5 at Eisenhower Park in East Meadow.
“Marathons are the ultimate challenge,” said Justin Wezik, 30, of Hempstead Village, as he ran his 10th Long Island marathon. There’s nothing like participating in a big race close to home, he said.
“You get to run the streets you drive everyday,” said Wezik, who finished in 3 hours and 51 minutes.
Miller Place native Thomas Rammelkamp, 28, of Falls Church, Virginia, was the first to cross the full marathon finish line. The women’s winner was Patchogue’s Gabrielle Russo, 33, an assistant professor of anthropology at Stony Brook University.
Petrus Cesarion, 32, of Westbury, won the men’s 10K race, while Seaford’s Kelly Perno-Grosser, 37, won the women’s 10K.
Manhasset running coach Aileen Barry won the women’s half-marathon. Galo Vasquez, of New Paltz, won the men’s half-marathon. Peter Hawkins, of Malverne, was the first wheelchair athlete to cross the finish line.
Some runners wore costumes. Supporters, many holding colorful signs with inspirational messages, positioned themselves on bleachers or grassy highway medians closed off to motorists for a view of the runners. 
“It seems like all of Long Island is running,” an announcer said over the marathon’s speaker system as thousands hit the pavement — some quickly discarding layers of clothing on patches of grass.
Volunteers in yellow shirts handed out water in paper cups, dozens of which were tossed about on roadways. Waiting on the other side of the finish line were plastic bag packages of bagels, bananas, apples and muffins, along with event staffers ready to pour post-race beers.
Sam Buttigieg, 61, of Massapequa, who recently retired from JPMorgan Chase, finished his first half-marathon in 20 years. He and other Massapequa Road Runners gathered in the designated beer tent after the race.
“Oh my God, it’s the best beer ever,” Buttigieg said.
Former Hempstead Village Mayor Wayne Hall Sr., 71, who had kidney transplant surgery in August 2016, posted videos of his 10K race on Instagram, along with some self-motivating commentary. As he reached the 4-mile marker, he told himself, “Looking good, Wayne,” and “not bad.” As he hit a fifth mile, he said, “Here I go. . . . Getting there.”
Peter Gagliardo and Maria Bournias of Tenafly, New Jersey, raced with hand-crank cycles in the marathon. Maria was born with spina bifida and Peter suffered a spinal injury in 2006.
“The reason I choose this sport is it’s one of the few adaptive sports,” Gagliardo said before the race started.
Runners with the Carle Place-based Step by Step organization pinned the names of those who have battled ovarian cancer to their T-shirts, in an effort to raise awareness. The group of 12 has raised $5,000 this year, director Joe Bencivenga said.
Others motivated themselves through humor. Friends Maria Becker of Bay Shore and Vicky LaSala of Seaford had shirts made up for their first half-marathon, stating on the front: “I thought they said 1.31 miles.”
Max Gorelik, 37, of Springfield, Pennsylvania, fresh off his third marathon this month, said he enjoyed the serenity of the course. 
“There are no distractions,” he said of the mostly parkway route. “It was the best organized race I’ve ever run.”
More than 5,000 people registered for the three races held Sunday after a fun run and other activities on Saturday. Organizers reported Saturday that 786 runners registered for the marathon, 3,229 for the half-marathon and 1,277 for the 10K, up from last year’s participation when 474 people ran in the marathon, 2,073 in the half-marathon and 1,105 in the 10K. 
The marathon has its roots in the 1970 Earth Day Marathon in Central Park. It moved to Long Island in 1973. The half-marathon began in 1984, and the 10K race was added in the 2000s.

Jill Mahon thought her boyfriend Dave Ludin might have had something up his sleeve when she heard that all four of their parents would be coming into town to watch as he ran in his first marathon.
Her suspicions were confirmed when moments after a breathless Ludin crossed the finish line, he presented her with a handmade gold ring.
“The second he crossed the finish line, he immediately got down on one knee with a ring he made and asked if I would marry-thon him,” she said.
She said yes.
Ludin made the ring himself using a 50 cent euro coin the couple got on a recent trip to Venice and crafted its box from the branch of a tree in a wooded area near their Patchogue home.
The couple said they met online. Mahon, 31, is a resident psychiatrist at Stony Brook University Medical Center and Ludin, 32, is a Suffolk County worker. They have traveled the world together, including a visit to Machu Picchu in Peru and a scuba diving trip in Zanzibar.
“If she said yes to me like this . . . ” Ludin said, gesturing to his sweaty post-race appearance as he cooled down after the race. Mahon admitted tearing up a bit, even if the proposal wasn’t totally unexpected.
“I’m thrilled,” she said. “It’s just so easy with him.”
Ludin’s mother, Alane Dashner, had a diamond heart necklace waiting to give her new daughter-in-law. “My mother gave it to me, and now I can give it to my daughter,” she said. The proposal took place with a half-dozen of the couple’s friends and their parents waiting nearby, including Mahon’s mom Karen and father Mike who traveled from Davenport, Florida, and Buffalo.
“I am elated,” Karen Mahon said. “We love Dave and feel they are a perfect match for each other.”
When asked if they had set a wedding date, Jill Mahon just laughed.
“No, it’s only been about 20 minutes,” she said.

The rain pelted Gabrielle Russo with every step, and 40-mph wind gusts meant there was a literal invisible force pushing her off the road. Nearly 3,000 runners ending up dropping out of last month’s Boston Marathon, including many elite runners, but not Russo, the Stony Brook University assistant professor, who was the 58th woman to cross the finish line.
Now, let’s rewind to October 2017. Patchogue’s Russo is running in the Suffolk Marathon, rain is again pelting her with every step and high winds rattled more than a few runners. Russo, though, not only won the event, but did it in a women’s course record of 2 hours, 55 minutes and 31 seconds.
Russo admitted she wouldn’t mind staying dry for Sunday’s Long Island Marathon. But even if the forecast holds steady — morning showers are predicted, though nothing as bad as Boston — she at least knows she’s had plenty of preparation and, along with it, plenty of success. 
Russo will join hundreds of runners in the Long Island Marathon, which begins at Charles Lindbergh Boulevard at 8 a.m. and wraps up 26.21 miles later at the finish line in Eisenhower Park. Shorter races kick off on Saturday, with the Kids Fun Run, 1-mile run, and 5k. The marathon, half marathon and 10k are all held on Sunday. Last year’s main marathon had 474 finishers, while thousands more competed in the shorter events. 
Though she came in second in last year’s Long Island Marathon — only her second marathon at the time — Russo’s goals for this year’s race are modest: a good time (and a pretty good running time).
“The expectations I have for myself . . . are to remain grateful for the opportunity to run another marathon locally, and within a reasonable time frame [after reaching her goal of running Boston], to be brave and believe that I am capable of leaving on the course whatever is left in me after a long training cycle,” said Russo, who also won the United State Track and Field 50k Road Championships in March. 
Russo, 33, would like to qualify for the 2020 Olympic Trials, which means a running time of 2:45:00. That, though, means keeping a fairly strict routine — and one that fully balances a burgeoning running career with a well-established career as a professor of anthropology, and researcher. Russo’s training regimen has her up at 4:30 a.m. and running twice a day, while her career in academia has her juggling grant writing, data analysis and the occasional trip to Kenya, where she’s a research partner at a field site. 
“I just figure out how to make it work,” she said. “There’s a lot of meal planning — I’m vegan — and efficiency strategies I’ve come to adopt, and these are just as important as eliminating things I don’t consider important. Simply, I’ve defined my priorities. . . . That’s how I choose to live — deliberate choices to make my dreams happen.”
That was certainly the case last month when Russo finished the Boston Marathon in 2:58:16, despite “epic” conditions that made it feel below freezing, she said. “At several water stations, I thought I had grabbed fluid cups, only to look down and realize there was no cup in my hand — my hands had lost feeling,” she said. “Boston 2018 has now become a reference point we look back on during future races when we feel we’ve reached the limits of our effort. We can ask ourselves, ‘Is this as difficult as Boston 2018? Am I digging as deep as I did that day?’ And hopefully, we can use that checkpoint to push ourselves a little bit further, dig a little deeper, when we need it most.”
Turns out, one of the few things stronger than rain, cold, fatigue and 40-mph winds, is a marathoner on a mission.

Road closures for Sunday’s Long Island Marathon are underway and will be changing as the race progresses.
Nassau police reported the following closures well into the afternoon:
• Charles Lindbergh Boulevard (Merrick Avenue to Earle Ovington Boulevard): closed 5 a.m. to 10 a.m.
• Charles Lindbergh Boulevard (except above): closed 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.

Additionally, security will be tight for the race, but there is “no credible threat” to the event or its participants, Nassau County Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder said Wednesday.
At a news conference in Mineola, Ryder said a “large contingent” of uniformed officers will be assigned to the marathon. They include members of the county’s Bureau of Special Operations’ SWAT Team, Homeland Security, K-9, Arson Bomb and Emergency Services, who will be equipped with portable radiation detectors. 
“This is one of the top three issues we have each year that we need to address from a security standpoint,” Ryder said. “We do it very well. We use the proper amount of resources to make sure that the people in that race and our residents remain safe.” 
Ryder said there is no specific threat to the event, which typically attracts 4,500 to 5,000 runners and another 3,500 to 5,500 spectators. 
The security measures, which are largely the same as in recent years, include restricting the starting line on Charles Lindbergh Boulevard in Uniondale to registered participants, while all vehicles must be credentialed in advance, Ryder said.
Bags and backpacks belonging to runners must be clear and plastic and are subject to inspection from K-9 units before going on UPS trucks to the finish line, Ryder said.
Spectators are not allowed to carry bags of any kind to the finish line, which will be in Eisenhower Park in East Meadow, Ryder said. Packages or bags found on the ground will be destroyed and discarded, he said. Authorities said personal items should not be stashed by participants along the race route.
