Bambu Desserts and Drinks opens in Stony Brook

New York’s first Bambu Desserts and Drinks has opened in Stony Brook serving che, a Vietnamese dessert drink of tapioca, coconut milk, flavored jellies, the lychee-like longan fruit and various ingredients like basil, red beans and avocado.

The drink looks like an edible terrarium with its layers, or an especially decorative version of bubble tea. Other drinks include the Thai iced tea and nuoc mia, Vietnamese sugar-cane tea, coffee drinks and smoothies — all of which fall between $5.50 and $7. The shop also serves macarons.

The franchise started in California, with branches in Georgia, Florida, Texas, Pennsylvania and Washington State.

When the place opened in San Francisco in 2013, San Francisco Chronicle writer Alison Cook said she loved the Yogurt Lush, a tart whipped yogurt served with chopped strawberry, mango and kiwi, but there was no boba (tapioca pearls) to be found — since the shop was so busy, it had run out.

Bambu is open from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays, until 10 p.m. weekends and until 8 p.m. Sundays. It’s closed Mondays.
