Mark your calendars for the weekend of Aug. 3-4. Long Island’s biggest barbecue event will be taking place on the verdant grounds of the Maples in Manorville: the 7th annual Battle of the BBQ Brethren. More than 40 teams (some from as far away as Florida) will compete for cash, prizes and invitations to the American Royal World Series of Barbecue in Kansas City, Mo. and the Jack Daniels Invitational in Lynchburg, Tenn.

Jacked Up BBQ, an award-winning team, will be on hand to feed the crowds with competition-style barbecue, and there will be cooking and grilling demos throughout the weekend.

On Saturday, it's live music with WBAB’s Joe Rock and The Allstars, a custom car show presented by Eastern Long Island Cruisers, a grilling competition, the winners of which will compete in a “Chopped”-style grilling shootout against a yet-to-be-announced mystery chef.

Sunday is judgment day: a New York State championship in which the teams will compete in the four standard categories: chicken, ribs, pork butt and brisket.

The Battle of the BBQ Brethren is from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday at The Maples, 10 Ryerson Ave., Manorville. Admission is $3 (free younger than 10). All proceeds go to John Theissen Childrens Foundation. For more information, go to bbqbrethrenbattle.com.
