What drew me to Wendy’s this rainy afternoon was the debut of Dave's Hot 'N Juicy, the product of much rethinking. (Read about it in today's Newsday.) I tried the half-pound double cheeseburger and came away fairly pleased.

What's new and different: thicker patties, a toasted and buttered bun, extra cheese. And no mustard. The company even confabulated with a pickle chemist (what, you've never heard of a pickle chemist?) to achieve just the right flavor profile.

Bottom line: A much better burger than the one I remember. Although cooked through-and-through (no pink), the patties were, as advertised both hot and juicy. I liked the bun, which was soft and yet substantial enough to stand up to all the ooze and toppings (tomato, chemically correct pickles, lettuce and red onion).

Other finds at Wendy’s: A decent (moist) “ultimate chicken grill” sandwich. A plain and simple baked potato. And all-natural lemonade. What the place calls “natural-cut fries” with sea salt were definitely on the dry side (a little greasiness can be a good thing).

The Wendy's I visited was in Farmingdale at 2013 Broadhollow Rd., 631-752-0337. For the one nearest you, click here.
