The home of Fudgie the Whale gets a face-lift at the 70-plus Carvel locations across Long Island. Expect bold colors in each shop, wood flooring and lounge-meets-cafe seating at the chain where the best-seller is a whale-shaped cake made of vanilla and chocolate ice cream, layered with crunchies.
Check out the chain’s new look at the Hicksville location throughout the week, where franchisee Fred Yam and family celebrate the store’s 30th anniversary with daily deals, like the buy-one-get-one shake on Thursday and the BOGO Flying Saucer (ice cream sandwiches) six pack on Friday. Saturday offers the biggest deals, when prices roll back to 1987: Small soft-serve cones are $.99, Flying Saucer 6-packs are $3.99, soft-serve sundaes are $1.99 and small square cakes are $5 each.
The new look for Carvel debuted in Florida in 2014 along with an updated logo. In 2013, the company introduced variety in the ice cream cake selection, novelty ice cream flavors and co-branding with Reese’s, Oreo and Heath.
Of the 400 stores across the country, 30 percent have updated, with the remainder on track to change in the next four to five years.
Tom Carvel started his business as a food truck in Hartsdale, New York, in 1929 and introduced a brick and mortar location in the 1930s.
It took awhile to perfect Fudgie the Whale, who was introduced in 1977.
