Chevere, the ambitious Dominican / pan-Latin restaurant on Merrick Road in Freeport, has closed. It opened early in 2015 and, in August of that year, Newsday awarded it three stars for its lively cuisine, which blended tradition and innovation.

Chevere’s outgoing message says that the restaurant is undergoing renovations; a sign on the door says it will soon reopen under new management. I called the business next door, Marcia’s Dominican Hair Salon, to see if anyone there had any details, and I learned that its owner, Marica Beltre, was, in fact, the new management in question. The Latin restaurant will be called El Meson, and Beltre hopes to open in the next month or two.
