Chinese restaurant New Fu Run opens in Great Neck

North Shore Nassau aficionados of Chinese food now have an alternative to driving to Queens. New Fu Run, a branch of the Flushing restaurant Fu Run, has opened in Great Neck.
Owner Tina Zhang, who moved from Queens to Manhasset a few years back, is all too familiar with the perils of traveling to Flushing to dine: parking is a perennial problem. “I know a lot of people on Long Island — Chinese and American — who would love to eat authentic Chinese food without having to travel.”
New Fu Run, which opened two weeks ago on Middle Neck Road, is just around the corner from one of Great Neck’s municipal lots.
Zhang’s family is from Liaoning, a province in northeastern China, and when the original Fu Run opened in 2005, it was the first restaurant in New York to serve the cuisine of the Dongbei region, the northeastern-most area that used to be called Manchuria.
Diners used to the Chinese-American repertoire (based largely on Cantonese cooking) will find a wealth of new flavors here. The menu is illustrated with color photos to guide novices through rarities such as country-style beef with cucumber, a cold dish, spicy conch with chili oil, cabbage and pork meatball soup, sea cucumber with pork, jellyfish with scallion, sauteed fish maws with green pepper, boiled leek-and-pork dumpling and Dongbei’s most famous dish, lamb chops smothered in cumin. Almost all of the main dishes at New Fu Run are under $20, many under $15.
The restaurant is sleek and attractive, with Chinese lanterns mixing it up with crystal chandeliers. There is a full bar.
