Highway Diner & Bar, which occupied the building next to the World War II tank on Montauk Highway in East Hampton, has closed.

The attractive and airy-looking place made its debut in late 2012 and received a two-star rating a few months later. Memorable dishes included a bacon, egg and cheese sandwich on a pretzel croissant, the signature Highway burger --  “smoky, crusty, oozy and served with grand hand-cut fries” -- and a first-rate ice cream sandwich featuring house-baked chocolate chip cookies.

A Facebook posting says that the place has been sold and adds, “We will leave it to the new owners to announce their future plans.”
