At first glance, the new bar Elsie Lane seems like it could be a run-of-the-mill hangout — flatscreens behind the bar, a few booths and a pool table — that upholds the long string of bars that have dwelled at 29 Jericho Tpke. in New Hyde Park.
But every seemingly divey element, from kitsch on the walls to a dart board in the back, have been carefully considered by the new owners. “It’s basically a hip sports bar, with elevated burgers, wings and cocktails,” said Sal Mignano, who opened the spot Friday with partners Ryan Sipp and Bill Oxios. Mignano had a lot of time to tinker with his portion of the concept: He owns The Leaky Lifeboat Inn in Seaford, and is a former owner of both Vauxhall and Radio Radio in Huntington, among others.
Elsie Lane — named for Sipps’ daughter — purposefully combines elements both high and low brow: A copper bartop and mixed drinks in coupe glasses, bottlers of Budweiser alongside cans of the Belgian beer Delirium Tremens, a pinball machine in the back (as well as giant Jenga) and chef-driven pub food.
That chef is Charlie Keller, also executive chef of The Rex Burger & Lobster in nearby Mineola, who's created a succinct menu focused on wings and burgers. Those wings (half dozen for $9, dozen for $16) undergo brining and baking before being fried, and can come with six sauces, including Thai peanut and a chipotle-based “Elsie sauce.” A handful of burgers ($12 to $15) — all cooked medium — include one topped with mayo- and American cheese and another, with pickled green tomatoes, bacon, cheddar, buttermilk slaw and barbecue sauce.
Breweries such as Founders, Ommegang, and Barrier are represented on the dozen taps. The opening cocktail lineup from Oxios, a longtime bartender, is comprised of four cocktails, a Bees Knees (Ford’s gin, lemon juice and honey, $11) and a bourbon sidecar ($12) among them; starting next week, the bar will also be blending two booze-laced shakes ($12 to $13), including one that combines Sail Away Coffee Co. cold-brew coffee, vanilla ice cream, crushed Oreos and whipped cream.
Elsie Lane opens daily at 11:30 a.m. for lunch and dinner, and the bar stays open late.
