Flip Pizza in Mineola: First bites
Pistachio pizza isn’t something you come across every day. In fact, I know of only one place on Long Island where it’s served — the new Flip Pizza in Garden City.
After one bite of the garlicky, nut-topped 12-inch pie ($12), I felt assured that no vampires would come within yards of me. And, oh, what a crust — puffy, beautifully charred and clean-tasting. Credit the imported “tipo 00” flour as well as the restaurant’s Italian wood -burning oven. Joining the garlic and pistachios atop the white pie were fior di latte mozzarella, roasted red onions, grated grana Padano, rosemary and oregano.
Another specialty that made a positive first impression was the restaurant’s fusilli with a rich Bolognese sauce done with beef, veal and pork. At $10.50, it was a steal.
The flip side of Flip: No table service when it comes to ordering, which is done at the counter. But at least the food is brought to your table.
Flip Pizza is at 526 Jericho Tpke., Mineola, 516-280-9603.
