Less than a year after shuttering their Southampton location, the owners of Blue Duck Bakery Cafe are closing a second shop, this time in Riverhead. The artisanal bread company’s two other locations, in Southold and Greenport, will remain open.

Of the Riverhead location's closure, co-owner Nancy Kouris expressed sadness, saying in a statement that “we had great hope that we could be part of Riverhead’s revival” but that “the obstacles became too great for us to continue.” Among the problems cited were the disruptive effect of nearby construction and the difficulty of finding quality personnel.

At its peak, Blue Duck — which specializes in European-style breads and other preservative-free baked goods — had four bakeries in the East End. With the closing of the Riverhead location, Kouris and her co-owner, husband Keith, will have only a North Fork presence.

It was almost exactly 20 years ago that the first Blue Duck bakery opened in Southampton. It lasted until September of 2018. The Riverhead location opened in December of 2012.

Blue Duck Bakery is at 130 Front St., in Greenport, 631-333-2060, and at 56275 Main Rd. in Southold, 631-629-4123, blueduckbakerycafe.com
