Coco Taco Truck opens at Eastport Marina
South of Montauk Highway between Mastic and Westhampton, dozens of fingers of land dangle into Moriches Bay, each one boasting salty breezes and spectacular views. Almost none of them, however, offers those amenities to the public.
But head down South Bay Ave. in Eastport, and the Eastport Marina will welcome you for an al fresco meal of Latin specialties from Coco Taco, a new truck from Roger Bencosme and Kazi Hassan (owners of Brewology 295 in Speonk), headed by their chef, Roberto Carlos Leon.
Start with ceviche of ahi tuna with mango, chilies and avocado ($16) or lobster and shrimp ($18), or guacamole (regular, $11, with lobster, $16). Tlayudas — big, crisp tortillas topped pizza-style, with an assortment of ingredients — include one with smoked strip steak, roasted corn, tomato salsa and cotija cheese; one with Mexican chorizo, smoked Cheddar, avocado and chipotle aioli; and one with pork belly, black beans, black mole and jalapeño crema ($14 to $15).
The half dozen tacos ($5 to $10) include birria, with braised short rib, beef broth and Oaxacan cheese; chipotle chicken with pineapple, red mole and pineapple-habanero salsa; fried shrimp with salsa verde; and lobster with avocado, mango and roasted poblano. There are also pork and chicken tamales ($8).
The setting couldn’t be prettier, and you have your choice of picnic tables at the water’s edge or high-tops under a shady gazebo.
The truck is open from noon to 8 p.m. from Thursday to Monday at the Eastport Marina. 50 South Bay Ave., Eastport; 631-801-4020, cocotacotruck.com
