Maxi Priest at Sole East

Back when mixtapes were a popular courting method, Maxi Priest’s music was often a staple of many a romantically inclined playlist.

Of course, modern tuneful wooing tends to involve jump drives and iTunes, but during the early 1990s, a common way to send a personalized musical message was to make a compilation via CD-to-tape recording – and at that point in time, Mr. Priest was topping the sales charts with hits like “Close To You” (1990) and “Housecall” (as part of a duo with dancehall star Shabba Ranks, 1991). Both tracks speak of unrequited passion in confident search of conclusion, making the songs mutually excellent fits for anyone looking to melodically sway a potential sweetheart with a love song-packed cassette.

His work, while technically reggae, incorporates a lot of soulful R&B, making him a “reggae fusion” artist – and his career has been a successful one, with a catalog of albums and singles released over a period of 20 years. As of late, Priest has been touring around the world performing, and his next upcoming stop has him appearing on LI this weekend.
