When it comes to hip-hop, it’s hard to argue that there has ever been a star as important as Joseph Ward Simmons — better known as MC Run of RUN-DMC.

Among the many accomplishments he and his band achieved is a Grammy nomination, gold and platinum records, appearing in major motion pictures, breaking down barriers between rap and rock, finding acceptance by the media (when hip-hop was yet to do so) and becoming the second hip-hop group to find enshrinement in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

These days are different, however — as Run is now known as Rev. Run after being ordained as a Pentecostal minister, and finding strong success as a reality TV player with the MTV program based around his family, “Run’s House.”  With the death of RUN-DMC DJ, Jam Master Jay, in 2002, the group disbanded (although Run and Darryl “DMC” McDaniels are scheduled to perform together later this year at the FunFunFun Fest in Austin, Texas), leaving Rev. Run to a solo career.

While he hasn’t dominated his genre like he did when RUN-DMC was still at the top of its game, Run has continued to make noise as a solo artist. And for those who have never had the chance to catch him live, he’ll be taking the stage at SL East in East Hampton (44 Three Mile Harbor Rd., 212-627-1235, sleast.com) on Saturday, Aug. 4 some time after 9 p.m.

He’ll be appearing with DJ Ruckus — one of the scene’s better known celebrity DJs — and when the two perform together, the energy levels are high. Table service is the best way to get into SL, so call in advance or order at the door (the minimum for this event is yet-to-be-announced, but $1500 is a fairly employed fee), and watch for celebrities; it’s impossible to know for sure who may show up — but keep in mind Run’s brother Russell (as in entrepreneur Russell Simmons) is one of the most-recognized famous folk on The Hamptons scene.
