Southampton Social Club still going strong

With Labor Day 2012 now in the past, the Hamptons gets a chance to celebrate a different special day of sorts, a marker of time that – while is basically unheard of by those who live outside the East End – is very significant to locals: “Tumbleweed Tuesday.”

The term refers to the annual day after Labor Day, when city-based visitors, tourists and many of the pop-up, seasonal businesses return to their full-time addresses. The result of the mass departure is that many of the streets around the Hamptons suddenly revert from busy to quiet, bucolic lanes, free of much of the traffic and parked cars that tend to create annual disdain toward the many international jet-setters, Manhattanites and Brooklynites that swell the population during the warmer months.

Unfortunately, it also means that many of the restaurants, bars and lounges that specialize in entertainment and upscale meals are likely to fade out, resulting in parties and meals shrinking in demeanor -- if not disappearing completely – leaving locals few options. However, one eatery and hot hang has decided to “hang” around this fall and winter, and to keep things jumping until New Year’s Eve.

Starting on Memorial Day weekend 2012 and continuing until just a day ago, a night at Southampton Social Club (256 Elm St. Southampton, 631-287-1400, southamptonsocialclub.com) often involved waiting on long lines to gain entry – and for those who remain interested in the good times served at this simmering summer spot, it turns out the place is poised to keep things busy with weekly events and special bashes beyond the advent of autumn.

Until Jan. 1, 2013, the ‘Social is scheduled to feature such gatherings as live music and DJs on Wednesdays, an industry night on Thursdays, more bands and performers for Fridays and a DJ every Saturday – with each night opening at a happy hour from 5-8 p.m. In addition, there will be singular soirees to celebrate such noteworthy events as the Hamptons International Film Festival, Columbus Day, Halloween (a weeklong “Nightmare on Elm Street” fete), Thanksgiving Eve and Christmas – all culminating when Dec. 31 checks out.
