The 'BOOM is back for 2014
If you enjoyed all of the arts-driven events brought about by SPARKBOOM in 2013, you may want to head toward Huntington come the weekend as the creative collective will be kicking off its second season with the “Beards, Bards and Boom” bash on Saturday, June 21 at the Walt Whitman Birthplace site.
An initiative spawned by the collaboration of local small businesses, municipal groups and nonprofit organizations (such as Fotofoto Gallery, the Art League of Long Island, the Heckscher Museum of Art and the Huntington Arts Council), the full goal of the enterprise is to nurture native talent while also providing endorsement of Long Island’s arts and culture scene.
SPARKBOOM hosted numerous events in 2013, all of which gave indigenous poets, painters and other inventive Islanders a chance to present their skills to the public – and Saturday’s showcase will be a similar circumstance, as from 7 to 10 p.m. all who attend will be able to peruse an indoor art gallery and an outdoor sculpture garden -- filled with the efforts of such area artists as Bill Shillalies, Tonito Valderrama and Beth Giacummo, among several others. In addition, there will be live music from Rorie Kelly, Tom Moran Band, and Robert Sloan plus spoken word performances from a number of poets, including Metapoetic, Chatham and Bri Onishea.
Admission is free, but there will be a suggested $5 donation at the door; for more information visit facebook.com/sparkboomli and sparkboom.org.
