German restaurant Victor Koenig's closes in Floral Park after 71 years

Victor Koenig's in Floral Park has served its last sauerbraten.
The 71-year-old German-continental restaurant closed on the first day of Oktoberfest in Munich.
A staff message on the Koenig's web site stated: "We regret that we cannot continue to serve you, our faithful customers. The past 71 years have been full of good times, good food, and the appreciation of our loyal clients." On Facebook, the staff thanked diners "for the fabulous stories you shared with us over the years."
No details were given about why the place was shut.
Koenig's was known for dishes that included sauerbraten, wursts, headcheese, herring in cream sauce, goulash soup, Wiener schnitzel, smoked pork chops, and roast fresh ham, as well as pot roast, corned beef and cabbage and mussels marinara. Lunchtime sandwiches also were popular for many years.
The closing marks another in a series of finales for German restaurants on Long Island. Fewer than a half dozen remain, including Plattduetsche Park in Franklin Square, Oak Chalet in Bellmore and Pumpernickel's in Northport.
