The Golden Coach Diner, a landmark on West Jericho Turnpike in Huntington since 1980, will close on Monday.
Co-owner Maria Korines said she is retiring. Since her husband, founder Harry Korines, died two years ago, she said, "it has been very difficult to carry on."
The Korines family posted a notice in the diner window and on social media expressing their “most sincere thanks to the generations of loyal patrons who have supported us throughout the years.”
According to an obituary in the Hellenic News of America, Harry Korines was born in Kalivia, Greece, in 1938. After moving to the United States, he and two brothers-in-law opened the Golden Coach Diner in East Rockaway. In 1980, he opened the Huntington diner on his own.
This will be the second Long Island diner to close in a matter of days, following Baldwin Coach Diner's decision to shutter after 61 years.
While Syosset's former Celebrity Diner was recently reborn as Neptune Diner, many other longtime eateries have closed in the past two years, from the South Bay Diner and Lindencrest Diner, both in Lindenhurst; to the Mediterranean Diner in Bellmore and The Lantern Diner in West Hempstead.
