Great Neck: Dining at H-Mart Plaza

Soon after Great Neck’s H-Mart supermarket opened in the summer of 2008, signs proclaimed the imminent arrival of H-Mark Plaza, just across the parking lot. It has arrived.
While many of the spaces in the three-story structure are still vacant, there is a bakery called Gateaux, whose Asian-French-style pastries and cakes reminded me of the ones up the street at Koryodang.
The lower level of H-Mart Plaza is occupied by a housewares store that sells linens, small appliances, kitchen equipment and tabletop. The upper level is called a food court, although it is small and boasts only two establishments so far.
Yimat House specializes in Korean versions of Chinese food along with noodles and Korean dumplings.
Woojeon serves classic Korean dishes such as kalbi (short ribs), bulgogi (rib-eye), seafood pancake and ox-bone soup. I ordered the gobdol bibimbap, rice topped with thinly sliced vegetables, beef and a fried egg. Even though Woojeon is an order-at-the-counter-bus-your-own-table sort of place, this dish ($10) was served, very correctly, in a screaming-hot stone bowl that created a crust on the rice at the bottom.
Woojeon is at 485 Great Neck Rd., Great Neck, 516-487-3857. The food court stays open until 9 p.m.
