Great Neck: Masago's massive menu markdown

Some sweet deal's going on in Great Neck at the new Masago Neo Japanese Cuisine: Everything on the menu is slashed by 30 percent. Until a short time ago, weekends were an even bigger bargain, with a 50 percent markdown, but such is no longer the case.
The dish nobody could keep their chopsticks out of on a recent visit was a lovely salad of shredded roasted duck over crisp romaine, garnished with mango slices and dressed with a yuzu-citrus-soy vinaigrette. After the discount (it was originally $12), the cost came to $8.40.
Sushi rolls are fancy and flamboyant, shown in blazing color photos on the menu. While I could appreciate the flavors and textures in the Masago sushi sandwich (spicy tuna, spicy salmon, tempura flakes, eel sauce, mango sauce and bonito flakes, originally $13, reduced to $9.10), the four big triangular pieces made for unwieldy eating. An entree of chirashi (originally $18, reduced to $12.60) featured a conventional assortment of somewhat overchilled finfish plus the ever-boring kani and cooked shrimp. Still, everything was fresh and attractively plated.
Masago is at 324 Great Neck Rd., Great Neck, 516-498-8888.
