Hibachi restaurant Sweet Mandarin Bistro opens in Glen Cove after renovation
Sweet Mandarin Bistro in Glen Cove has been slowly ramping up its service in the past few weeks during a soft opening after a long, long renovation. Stylish, modern décor, moody lighting and family-size hibachi tables distinguish the new restaurant, which serves sushi and other Japanese dishes as well as grilled-in-front-of-you specialties and plenty of Chinese restaurant standards to boot.
Soups include both miso ($2.75) and wonton ($9.95 for two). Appetizers are a pan-Asian mixture of shrimp and vegetable tempura ($8.75), yakitori ($6.75), scallion pancakes ($5.75) and egg roll ($2.75). Noodle lovers can choose from roast pork lo mein ($9), seafood and vegetable soba ($17), pad Thai ($11-$15) and Singapore rice noodles ($12).
The sushi bar works overtime, providing both appetizers such as a tuna tower with avocado, cilantro, pine nuts and red onion ($12.50) and entrees including a trio sushi dinner with four pieces each of tuna, salmon and yellowtail ($26). There is sushi and sashimi à la carte as well as a bevy of traditional and specialty rolls.
Hibachi dinners include soup and salad, a shrimp appetizer, vegetables and rice, and range from $16 for the vegetarian’s delight to $36 for filet mignon and lobster tail. Kids portions are available at a reduced price.
If none of these tempt you, the kitchen will cook up General Tso’s chicken ($16) or a whole Peking duck ($34).
Japanese lunch specials ($10 to $11) and Chinese lunch box selections ($9) are served Monday to Saturday.
Sweet Mandarin Asian Bistro is located at 18 Cottage Row, Glen Cove, 516-671-2228.
