Italian restaurant MaBella opens in Commack

Maria and Frank Algieri have opened MaBella, a family-style Italian restaurant with takeout and catering in the space that had been Cafe Mendoza in Commack. “MaBella” is a combination of Maria’s name and their eldest child’s, Isabella.
With roots in Calabria, the family’s love for Italian cuisine led them to partner in Italian restaurants such as Sal D’s in Huntington Station before they broke off to open their own place. In addition to their daughter, they cite sons, Joe and Frankie, as part of the staff at the restaurant.
Among appetizers, look for Little Neck clams and mussels marinara, minestrone soup and pasta fagioli as well as garden, Caesar and arugula salads ($6 to $16). Pastas are well represented on the menu, from ravioli to baked ziti ($15 to $22). Among entrees diners will find veal scalloppini, grilled shell steak and shrimp oreganata ($13 to $27).
MaBella is open from 4:30 to 10:30 p.m., Sundays, Mondays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, and until 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday.
