Legal Sea Foods comes through with the chowder
I’d told my book club I’d make clam chowder for our meeting. The soup figured, albeit slightly, in the book we'd read: “The Art of Fielding” by Chad Harbach. But who was I kidding? As the day in question loomed, I conceded that I had neither the time nor the inclination to make clam chowder for 10 and transport it to the meeting. (Click here and here for some other book-club inspired food adventures.)
So I called up Legal Sea Foods at the Walt Whitman Shops. Did they sell clam chowder by the quart? They certainly did. I got two quarts each of New England and “light” (which has neither cream nor tomato and is really just a broth with lots and lots of chopped clams and vegetables). Both were $11.95 a quart and both were excellent. Many of us enjoyed a blend of the two chowders, a sort of semi-light, semi-New England concoction. Long Island clam chowder perhaps?
The verdict on “The Art of Fielding”: extremely likable but, ultimately, a light weight.
Legal Sea Foods is at 160 Walt Whitman Rd., Huntington Station, 631-271-9777.
